Subject: Task 9

Task 09 – Explain what a task-based approach is. Describe its main characteristics.

Task may be seen as a piece of work to be finished within a certain time. That is, it takes some time, and consequently an effort, to be done. Task-based approach is a way for learning a language by doing some “activities” or “tasks” using the target language. It is also a contextualised learning through which learners focus not on language but on a subject like Philosophy, Botany, Mechanics, Politics, and so on, making the research and communication (oral or written) using the target language. Moreover, learners are supposed to be agents a active in the process of their own knowledge construction and teachers are seen as monitors.

The main characteristics cited at Eric Digests site are the three below:

1 ) Learners have a purpose or a goal which requires the use of the target language;

2 ) The learning process involves a learning environment which is achieved by using the unique aspects of a language lab.

3 ) Motivation is an essential element to start and keep the learner involvement in the learning process.
