Explain what a lexical approach is. Describe its main characteristics.

The lexical approach to second language teaching has been seen recently as an alternative to grammar-based approaches. It concentrates on developing learners' proficiency with lexis - words/word combinations. The basis of this approach is on the idea that an important part of language acquisition is the ability to comprehend and produce lexical phrases as chunks of language. These chunks will become the data by which learners can see the patterns of language - what has been traditionally seen as grammar. While teaching, the focus is on “fixed expressions”, usually taken from spoken language.

Some of the main principles of the Lexical Approach are:
· Grammar/vocabulary dichotomy is invalid
· Collocation is used as an organising principle
· The concept of successful language is wider than accurate language
· Observe-Hypothesise-Experiment replaces Present-Practice-Produce
· Language consists of grammaticalised lexis - not lexicalised grammar
