Explain what a lexical approach is. Describe its main characteristics.
Lexical approach is the one that focuses on learners’ proficiency through the lexis. This lexis is about wholes of the target language, or “chunks”, which are part of the corpora that have been built. In fact this approach provides to the language learner the ability to comprehend and produce lexical phrases as the chunks. So, while recognizing a phrase in the target language’s speech, the learner can respond in an effective way. Fixed expressions are taught in order to provide the “chunks” to the language learner, “How are you?”, and its respective answer “I’m fine, and you?” are examples of it. Therefore, the language student learns good collocations of each different word of the target language. The main characteristics of this approach are:
Lexis is the basis of language.
Language consists of grammaticalised lexis - not lexicalised grammar
Grammar/vocabulary dichotomy is invalid
Successful language is a wider concept than accurate language
Collocation is used as an organising principle
