The term 'Lexical Approach' was coined in 1993 by Michael Lews in his book "The Lexical Approach: The sate of ELT and the way forward". It develops many of the fundamental principles advanced by proponents of the Communicative Approach. The Lexical Approach considers language not only about traditional grammar and vocabulary but it consists often of multi-word prefabricated chunks. Teachers using the Lexical Approach will not analyze the target language in the classroom, but will be more inclined to concentrate learners' attention upon these chunks.

Key principles

- Language consists of grammaticalised lexis, not lexicalised grammar.
- The grammar/vocabulary dichotomy is invalid;
- A central element of language teaching is raising students' awareness of, and developing their ability to 'chunk' language successfully.
- Although structural patterns are known as useful, lexical and metaphorical patterning are accorded appropriate status.
- Collocation is integrated as an organizing principle within syllabuses.
- The central metaphor of language is holistic – na organism; not atomistic – a machine.
- It is the co-textual rather than the situational element of context which are of primary importance for language teaching.
- Grammar as a receptive skill, involving the perception of similarity and difference, is prioritized.
- Receptive skills, particularly listening, are given enhanced status.
- The Present-Practice-Produce paradigm is rejected, in favor of a paradigm based on the Observe-Hypothesize-Experiment cycle.

In the Lexical Approach the materials and methods are different for students at different level of competence Significant re-ordering of the learning program is implicit in the Lexical Approach.
