The Lexical approach is not only a system that centers itself in vocabulary (which is differentiated from lexis as a "stock of words with different meanings"), rather it works on fixed phrases or "chunks" that are the data from which the students will acquire grammar. Lexis consists not on words merely, but expressions that occur in spoken language, such as "I'm sorry." Data is mostly not created, but original. According to Michael Lewis (1993), the creator of the term "lexical approach" claims that lexis is the basis of language, and that language consists of grammaticalized lexis. That means, the students will learn departing from lexis, that are the expressions used in everyday language; rather than knowing by heart some grammar points, they will learn the expressions and then, learn grammar from them. As Lewis asserts, "rather than trying to break things into ever smaller pieces, there is a conscious effort to see things in larger, more holistic, ways" (1997a, p. 204).
