Subject: Task 7

The lesson proposed by Karlys Wells offers lots of opportunities for practicing communication and to increase fluency. Moreover, it gives autonomy for learners to build up vocabulary using Internet and others tools to search for information with consequently vocabulary incorporated. Students to share information can use new words found in the research; also, these words can be organized under categories such as the logical ones suggested by Karlys. Thus, new vocabulary can be practiced again when writing a proposed summary and when creating “a collaborative list of buying principles.

As stated by Stephen B. Ryan in his essay “Overcoming Common Problems Related to Communicative Methodology” that “teachers are often faced with the challenging tasks of making our classes meaningful, practical and, yes, even fun”. Although it does not seem in a first glance, Karlys Wells achieve these tasks in my opinion. First of all, the lesson plan proposed by him is very practical because students are involved in looking for solutions to a day-by-day problem. It involves “research, critical thinking and complex decision-making”. Second, students get used to different tools to solve problems uplifting their autonomy in learning process. At least, they can have fun by doing an activity that is far away from boring grammar subjects dealing with.

However, I felt confusing about the suitable level for the lesson, even knowing that it is for students’ grades 9-12. The routine to be applied and the framework of language can change considerable according to students level in the target language. Equally important I agree with Daniel Antonio when he says, "this presentation fails in what concerns to specify the language functions that the teacher is intended to make students use.

Hugs,
J. Antonio A. Santos
