Subject: My Task # 7

I think the task proposed by Karlys Wells is meaningful, practical and it can be fun. The context of the learners induced to this kind of task (to buy a car) will help on the fun part. Buying a car is fun to work on if, and only if the students will be able to actually buy one someday. If it’s out of question, out of the context it can create a big problem in the student’s willing to perform the task. Let’s pretend the context is ok with the idea of buying a car. I remember my 15 years old cousin back in the US. She had a task just like that, though she was in High School, not in an EFL one. The idea was the same: she’d had to ask people who owned a car, research the internet and even go to a car dealer in order to buy the right car for her task. I believe it’s a great idea having students motivated by the tasks, specially those practical and meaningful ones like Stephen Ryan suggests in the text. And yes it can be fun also. Should not all classes be fun? I’d like to say more about the GOAL of the task. It is clear that interaction is one goal in a task like that, and so is practicing the language. In interaction games like this, the learner will have to express his/her intention in buying a specific vehicle and the expertise on Wells’ task will have to advise on the right model to choose from. This will definitely conduct to interaction between students, and the teacher will have only to guide it through the process. Thereafter, feedback must be provided and ideas from the students must be considered for next tasks, unless the suggestion does not diverge from the bigger picture that the course has.
Please leave a comment, thanks.
