Communicative Approach On line Class
Learner: Mylene Fonseca Garcia
Task Seven

In my opinion this lesson plan has some of the important points intertwined with communicative approach but it also lacks significant parts of a CA course. To begin with, this lesson plan’s warm up functions as a useful brainstorm stage, raising the learner’s interest on the subject. Another good aspect is the interaction between S ó S (S= students) and S ó T (T= teacher). It sounds kind of obvious to say that, but it is a reasonable thing to avoid a teacher-centered class, a mistake very often committed by beginners. Besides, this lesson plan works on an interactive basis. Well, if the students are able to establish a communicative purpose, so they are probably under a communicative approach. I mean, when they choose the most adequate car and establish the related criteria to do so, they are actually performing a life situation role, despite the fact if this is just for a class activity
So, I find this example of a lesson plan learning-centered but it should offer constant feedback by the teacher to the students and it seems to lack it. Maybe the teacher’s role here needs to be a little more precise in making the convenient interventions to guide the class as planned. This is referred to what Ryan, when pointing out the most common mistakes of a CA course, calls clarifying goals, having consistency in teaching style and lessons need a routine framework. All these three points are crucial for an effective CA course. They should not be neglected. As the example given is just of one class, it is prudent to do not judge it only according these three points just mentioned.
Continuing to relate the lesson plan to Ryan’s article, it seems that this lesson plan respects the cultural awareness it demands. In other words, the subject proposed in class is understandable for the students and it has no possible offensive cultural barrier. The last point mentioned by Ryan is “to be clear about student-teacher relationship”. In this case it should reflect a friend-coach relationship and this seems to happen here, although it should keep a continuous feedback from the teacher.
To sum up, this is a good lesson plan as it arouses students participation and engagement but it lacks more guidance from the teacher as in his/her feedbacks to the class.
