Narrative of the acquisition of a second language


Todas a vezes que sou questionada sobre a minha aquisição do inglês tenho uma certa dificuldade, pois os fatos não me são muito claros. Minha memória apesar dos meros 26 anos não é das melhores, devo admitir.
A primeira lembrança que tenho é de que na quinta série a professora um dia escreveu no quadro a pergunta: “What’s your Telephone number?” Lembro-me de ter sido a única aluna a responder, mas onde eu aprendi os números não me lembro. Só lembro que fiquei toda convencida, coisas de criança. Logo depois eu comecei a estudar inglês em uma escola perto da minha casa, não me lembro o nome da escola a metodologia, com certeza eu aprendi algo lá, mas não me lembro o que. Depois aos 14 anos comecei a estudar com um professor particular, lembro-me que ele elogiava a minha pronúncia e dizia que eu tinha uma certa facilidade, me recordo que ia a aula só porque ele era um gato. Algum tempo depois comecei a estudar na Wizard, acho que estudei lá por dois anos também não me recordo de nada em especial, lembro-me de que eu gostava do método. Depois meu pai me matriculou no ICBEU onde estudei por um bom tempo. Também, acredite ou não, não me lembro de nada em especial era só mais uma aula de inglês. Eu não gostava muito porque as aulas eram Sábado à tarde e eu em pleno Sábado lá estudando inglês. Lembro me que gostava muito da biblioteca de ver as revistas e tentar ler em inglês as vezes eu alugava um vídeo em inglês. Estudei lá até 1997, quando entrei para um programa da ACM no qual eu precisava de inglês, foi a primeira vês que a língua me foi útil. Passei no programa e viajei. Lembro-me que os outros que viajaram estavam receosos de não serem compreendidos, eu nunca tive muito este problema porque nunca tive vergonha de falar estando certo ou errado, eu queria era me comunicar. Quando eu voltei em 1998 prestei o vestibular para Letras, pois a única matéria à aquela altura que eu gostava era inglês. Passei, e em abril de 1999 comecei a dar aulas de inglês o que tenho feito desde então. Lembro-me que sempre gostei de tentar entender os filmes em inglês, eu conversava muito comigo mesmo sempre tentei pensar em inglês, porque alguém um dia me falou que isso era importante. Não me comunicava com ninguém porque naquela época e-mail não era tão acessível como é hoje em dia, nunca gostei muito de tradução sempre tentava entender em inglês. Quando tive a oportunidade de morar três meses nos EUA com certeza o meu inglês deu um salto considerável. Creio que a oportunidade de ir para o país onde a língua é falada é sempre uma oportunidade única para o “improvement” de qualquer língua.
Para finalizar, sei que gosto muito da língua inglesa, mas não consigo me lembrar de quando este interesse surgiu. Creio que talvez durante todo o processo, mas não me lembro de nenhuma professora em especial, por exemplo.


Analysis
According to what Vera wrote in the article the fractal model, I agree that “the language acquisition should not be envisioned as a final product, but as a continuing and unending process in which we have a recurrent dynamic, of one pattern inside another. And that it’s also a dynamic, complex system, undergoing constant change.”
Still quoting Vera “the learning of an L2 is a process that undergoes many mediations, occurs in varied contexts and does not work in the same way with all individuals. Just as each human being is unique, the semiotic processes and connections made will also be unique.”
I believe that my own learning process includes several of the fractals, one liking to the other. Both cognitive and metacognitive components are present in different stages of my learning. Although, I could identify that the cognitive fractal was more present throughout my learning process.
I could identify Krashen’s input (i+1) at the stage where I tried to understand movies in English. And I also believe in Hatch theory when he emphasizes the importance of interaction, especially for the acquisition of vocabulary: the learner interacts with more proficient speakers, negotiating meaning and acquiring the language. As far as the Social-Historical Context I had my father as an stimulus, he was the one who was always providing me with the opportunity to learn a foreign language. I believe affiliation was present once at the end before I traveled I got interest in the culture, in belonging to that group. The Interaction, which I think was the most strong feature once I was in a stage that I needed to communicate to make my self understood in a real situation with native speakers, and this was also a period of enormous acquisition, when I traveled to the USA. Maybe it was present before that but I couldn’t identify it.
The strategies involved in the process I believe were mainly, in direct strategies; cognitive, I used to speak a lot in English since the beginning I tried to think in English and I used and I still do while I’m driving to talk loud in the language I’m learning, to repeat a lot. And of memory, I used to write new words and to recall the ones learned making connection whenever possible even to words in Portuguese. An in indirect strategies the social, when I had the opportunity to travel and before that I was never ashamed to commit mistakes I spoke to whoever it was. Affective, I was never afraid of trying, and that is something good to bear in mind. And the metacognitive aspect, I was always looking for opportunities to practice English and something I still do, is to pay attention whenever there is someone speaking, in the pronunciation in the structures used etc, once I’m still learning.

Vera, I’m sorry to have sent it in Portuguese to you, it’s just because I’ve written it in Portuguese some time ago and this week I’m kind of in a hurry and unfortunately I won’t have time to translate it. I hope this is somehow what you expected us to do.
