How can we test communicative competence?

Since the early 1970's, when Hymes exposed the first ideas regarding testing communicative competence, the basic idea of this kind of competence refers to "the ability to use language appropriately, both receptively and productively, in real situations." Then communicative tests have to be a measure of how the testees are able to use language in real life situations. They are usually very context-specific and require students to be prepared for this kind of test. Examples of this sort of test are information gap activities, role play and note taking activities. In fact, as it is pointed out in the text, it is not always possible to make language tests communicative, but it is possible to insert some communicative elements in them.
