Subject: Task 14

According to Dell Hymes, the speaker should have “not only the ability to form correct sentences but also to use them at appropriate time” (KITAO & KITAO, 1996)

The Communicative testing focuses more language use than grammatical accuracy. As well, Communicative tests must be very context-specific, that is, provide to testee opportunity to use the suitable language according to situation, which could be specific or general social situations.

The Communicative Approaching to testing measure the student’s ability in use language in his/her real life. In real life there is no right or wrong answer but appropriate or inappropriate use of language. Then, the evaluation might be done in band scales. “Each band has a description of the quality (and sometimes quantity) of the receptive or productive performance of the testee” (KITAO & KITAO, 1996)

Types of Communicative tests:

Speaking/Listening activities: informal gap – there is a lack of information that testee has to complete.

Reading/writing activities: use language for specific purposes - write business letter, memos, informal letters
- answer questions based on text or information that were given.
