According to Dell Hymes, the speaker should have �not only the ability to form correct sentences but also to use them at appropriate time� (KITAO & KITAO, 1996)

The Communicative testing focuses more language use than grammatical accuracy. As well, Communicative tests must be very context-specific, that is, provide to testee opportunity to use the suitable language according to situation, which could be specific or general social situations.

The Communicative Approaching to testing measure the student�s ability in use language in his/her real life. In real life there is no right or wrong answer but appropriate or inappropriate use of language. Then, the evaluation might be done in band scales. �Each band has a description of the quality (and sometimes quantity) of the receptive or productive performance of the testee� (KITAO & KITAO, 1996)

Types of Communicative tests:

Speaking/Listening activities: informal gap � there is a lack of information that testee has to complete.

Reading/writing activities: use language for specific purposes - write business letter, memos, informal letters
- answer questions based on text or information that were given.
