Testing Communicative Competence

Referring to Hymes’ concept of communicative competence, teachers can evaluate it by getting students into real life situations in which they are tested in both “use” and “usage” of the target language. It is, they are tested in their language knowledge, such as vocabulary acquisition and grammar rules, and also in “appropriacy”, which is, whether they are able to use the language in a proper way, considering the context and expectations. S. Kathleen & Kitao (1996) suggest that, besides focusing in a broad communicative evaluation, teachers also have the chance to contextualize the tests based on students’ real life, as for instance, there is a group of high school teenagers, then the teacher can use a situation common in a teen’s everyday routine to test those students. However, it is important to have in mind that real life situations frequently do not have right or wrong answers. There is a performance expected, but teachers need to consider students’ own opinions and personal characteristics.
