Traditionally, language tests aim testing knowledge about language, usually vocabulary and grammar. A communicative test should test not only accuracy, but also appropriacy. Their objective is to measure how students are able to use language in real life situations. In testing writing or speaking, for example, the emphasis is on the appropriate use of the language, not only on accuracy. In testing listening or reading, for example, the emphasis is on understanding the communicative intent of the speaker or writer. The skills are often combined in communicative testing. It is hard to find a completely communicative test, but many of them have at least some element of communicativeness. Communicative tests are also context-specific, as their aim is to make the situation as real as possible. There is a subjective element to the evaluation of these tests. Communicative language tests make an effort to test language in a way that reflects real communication.
