How can we use portfolios to evaluate our students'progress?
At first moment we need to consider the use of tradicional assessment has emphasized the measurement of a given body of defined and discrete knowledge as determined by a student's performance on an objective test (Herman, Aschabacher and Winter, 1992). This approach has often been limited to assessment of student and has provided information about teaching and learning processes (Thompson, 1995). Nowadays, educators have put increasing emphasis on a serch for alternative forms of measuring the processes inherent in actual classroom learning and teaching (Backer, 1990; Herman, Aschbacher and Winter, 1992, and Lewis, 1992). Therefore, alternative methods of assessment are part of classroom instructions. Adams and Hamm (1992) state that: "Portfolios can be used as a tool in the classroom to bring students together, to discuss ideas, and to provide evidence of understanding and the way to apply it. Through critical analysis of their work-and of their peers- students gain insight into other ways of looking at a problem". (p.103)
Through these quoted considerations, I think we can use portfolios to evaluate our students' progress through a deep analysis in their works which thy put in their portfolios, and we need to consider their purposes and audiences. Through this evaluation I think teachers can be increasing their knowledges about students and can get a better way to teach them.
