How can we use portfolios to evaluate our students' progress?

In my opinion, portfolios are a great way to evaluate students because we have access to a process because the teacher can observe how the student has developed and if he/she has improved throughout the course. It also works as a tool to aid the teacher of the efficiency of the course. Through a student’s portfolio we can see if the course is serving its purpose.

Once the contents of the portfolio are defined it is very important that the students get feedback while putting it together. This feedback should be provided by other students (peer review) individually or as a group and teachers. This way the students are assured of their improvements and of the areas that need more work.

In conclusion, a portfolio is great evaluation method because it emphasizes on students’ progress and course measurement and it works well as a self-evaluation. But it should not be taken as a substitute of traditional tests because of the different purposes of each one.
