Educators have been looking for alternative ways to assess students others than the traditional tests and one of these is with the use of portfolios. Their primary purpose is documenting the progress of the students and other uses for it can be a good material to report learners’ development to the parents, to the school management and it is a good way to motivate the students and teachers because it can serve as a memory – they can seat together and analyze how the growth in the target language is taking place. Another way that portfolios can motivate students is to allow him to include in it the works he considers his bests.

Another very important feature of portfolios is that them serve as help when building a curriculum or planning lessons because the portfolio can also show the points that need to be worked harder with the class.

Teachers can choose to keep all they think it is necessary to follow the students’ learning, from written (letters, quizzes, notes, homework...) until oral works (video on the tasks, reporting, reading, informal talks among the colleagues...) that will provide material to the teacher evaluate the language that the students are really using.

The portfolio can also allow the student to participate in the process of his evaluation because he will see how he dealt with his potentialities and dificulties. Each item placed in the portfolio should have a brief note from the student and/or the teacher about it and carefully dated.

If a communicative approach aims more on the ability to communicate appropriately and oral skills, the portfolio should contain more samples of these kind of work – tapes, videotapes, etc.
