How can we use portfolios to evaluate our students' progress?
The first thing to be done, is to define the course purposes and the objective of the audience, in this case, the students. The portfolio should include the learners’ works that show their use of language in a progressive way over a period of time, so that both students and teacher can compare their improvement and define what still needs to be worked on.
Concerning written skills, the students could be asked to write about a certain topic progressively. The first production would be a paragraph. From the second production on, they would be asked to start developing the theme by adding more information to it in order to produce a text. Students could be asked to read each other texts and suggest improvements.
Audiotapes and/or videotapes could be used to evaluate their oral skills. They could be given a real life situation and be asked to perform a dialogue with a partner for example. When recording it, the student him/herself would be able to watch it later and check what he/she needs to improve.
These are just a couple of suggestions. There a re a whole lot of possibilities to apply this system in class.
