TASK 13

CREATE A GOOD COMMUNICATION ACTIVITY AND DESCRIBE IT TO YOUR CLASSMATES. SAY WHICH TYPE IT IS, ACCORDING TO LITTLEWOOD.

The activity that I created is a processing information activity and it is based on a video. I think it will take a long time, like 50 minutes, for example. But it is worthwhile, because this activity is very enjoyable and deals with so many skills of language teaching. In addition to it, it is a kind of activity that students like to do.

The steps of this activity are:

Firstly, students are going to watch a part of the video. After they are going to divide in groups of 4 with 5 members, if there are 20 students in the classroom. So they are going to discuss the story that they watched and guess an ending to the episode. They have 10 minutes to reach a common decision about it. Moreover, they will have to perform the ending that they choose for this story to their classmates. Each group has 5 minutes to perform it. So the class will decide which ending is the best one. And to finalize the activity, the teacher plays the rest of episode to the students watch.

The story of the video is about a group of friends which tries to help their friend, Matt, to save from his ex-girlfriend. This is such boring woman, who still likes him and tries to have him again as her boyfriend. But Matt hates her very much.

This video is for ELT students which are in the elementary level.

The name of the episode is: “An old friend”. Transcripts:

Jane and Matt are at a bar waiting for their friends, Helen and David.

Jane: Thanks, Matt.
Matt: Cheers.
Jane: What time are Helen and David coming?
Matt: Half past eight.
Jane: Right. Hey, guess what. I saw Simon last week.
Matt: Really? That isn’t very strange. He lives next door.
Jane: Oh, ha, ha. Very funny. No, I saw him in here. He has very good taste. You know, I think he really likes…..
Matt: Oh no.
Jane: What’s wrong?
Matt: At the bar. Don’t look!
Jane: Who? Who is she, Matt?
Matt: She was my girlfriend.
Jane: Really?
Matt: Really.
Jane: How long were you together?
Matt: A month.
Jane: Only a month?
Matt: It was a very long month.
Jane: Right…When did you last see her?
Matt: About three years ago. She moved to London. But she sometimes rings me at work.
Jane: So she still likes you?
Matt: Unfortunately, yes.
Deb: Matt!
Matt: Oh no! Help, Jane!
Deb: Matty! How marvelous!
Matt: Deb.
Deb: How long is it? Three years? You still have beautiful eyes. You’re happy to see me, aren’t you, Matty?
Jane: Hello. My name’s Jane.
Deb: Sorry?
Matt: Oh, yes. Jane is my….
Jane: Fiancée. Pleased to meet you.
Deb: Fiancée? I didn’t know you were engaged.
Matt: Didn’t you?
Deb: When did you get engaged?
Jane: About six months ago.
Matt: Six weeks….months ago.
Deb: Where did you meet?
Jane: On the Internet.
Matt: At a club.
Jane: We met in a chat room on the Internet. And then we met face to face at a club.
Matt: Er…right. Yes, that’s right! It was at a club.
Jane: And we fell in love, didn’t we, Matt?
Matt: Yes, we did.
Jane: I was very shy at first, but Matt was wonderful.
Deb: And when did you get engaged?
Jane: On the eighteenth of March.
Matt: Er, no. It was on the nineteenth. Don’t you remember?
Jane: Oh yes, You’re right, darling.
Deb: Where’s the ring?
Matt: Sorry?
Deb: Didn’t you buy an engagement ring? For Jane.
Jane: He did.
Matt: I did.
Jane: But I don’t wear it…because it’s a secret.
Matt: Nobody knows we’re engaged.
Jane: Now, who wants a drink?
Deb: No, thank you.
Matt: Same again, please….darling.
Deb: Matt. I can’t believe it. You’re engaged. I though that…well…
Matt: Er, yes. Sorry about that, Deb. Don’t tell anybody about Jane. It is a secret.

Helen: Oh no.
David: What is it?
Helen: Look at Matt.
David: He’s with Deb!
Helen: Poor Matt. He really didn’t want to see her again.
David: Yes, poor Matt.
Helen: Come on. Let’s go and help him. David! He needs our help. Hello, Deb. How are you?

At this part of the video, the teacher stops it and asks students to divide in groups and discuss a very creative ending for this episode.

After the students perform the ending they created for this story, the teacher plays to them the rest of the episode. The ending of the episode is:

Deb: Hello…er, Helen.
David: Hi
Deb: Hi.
Helen: Hello.
Matt: Huh?
Helen: Did you tell Deb our news?
Matt: What news?
Helen: Matt, really. Matt and I are engaged. What is it?
Jane: Hi everybody…What’s the matter? Is something wrong, darling?
Deb: So you’re engaged to Matt. And Jane is….?
David: Jane’s with me.
Deb: But I thought…
Matt: Er…would anyone like a drink?
Helen: Jane and I told Matt it’s ok to have two fiancée, but he can only marry one of us.

As we can see, this activity is process information. Because it stimulus the students to discuss, evaluate the facts, in groups, in order to reach a common decision (an ending to the story). This kind of discussion and evaluation is a communicative interaction between students, which is one important feature of communicative activities. And this interaction is a great opportunity for students to express their own individuality orally. In addition to it, this activity is based on a situation which students can encounter outside the classroom.
