Subject: Task 10

In his book The Lexical Approach, Michael Lewis coins the expression Lexical Approach and presernts its principals with the intent to make teachers think about the learning/teaching process in a new way.
He states that “Lexis is the basis of language” and presents the new approach as an alternative to the grammar-based approaches since he shows that the basis of the communicative process is the lexis.
By Lexis he points not only single words in the phrase but a whole meaningfull unit of words combinations which are stored in our mental lexicon. The principals of these new approach are presented by Michael Lewis as being:
1. The grammar/vocabulary dichotomy is invalid.
2. Collocation is used as an organizing principle.
3. Successful language is a wider concept than accurate language.
4. The Observe-Hypothesise-Experiment cycle replaces the Present-Practise-Produce Paradigm.
5. Most importantly, language consists of grammaticalised lexis--not lexicalised grammar.
The proposal is to make teachers include that lexical-based approach in the ELT process. It’s not difficult to a teacher interested in using this approach to include it in his practice but to do so the teachers have to open hand of the grammar as the basis of the teaching/learning process and that’s why they tend to avoid the idea of adopting the Lexical Approach.
