Lexical approach is an alternative to grammar-based approaches. The aim of this approach is to improve learner’s proficiency through Lexis or words and words combination. It is based on the idea that part of the acquisition of a language comes from the ability to comprehend and produce lexical phrases.

Lewis is the person who developed The Lexical Approach. And he defends the idea that language should be taught first than grammar. It means, students should look at the role of words in sentences in use to learn their function. So after students get used to them, they should be taught structure.

The Lexical Approach’s main principles are:
- Language tends to grammaticalise Lexis, not lexicalise grammar;
- The dichotomy grammar/vocabulary does not exist, because language consists of multi-words ‘chunks’;
- Collocations is integrated as an organizing principle with syllabuses;
- The co-textual element is more important than the situational element of context, which are of primary importance for language teaching.
- The Present-Practise-Produce paradigm is replaced by Observe-Hypothesise-Experiment cycle in the Lexical Approach.
