TASK 11

Explain what a genre-based approach is.

John Swales, in his book Genre Analysis: English in Academic Research Settings, proposes a definition of genre that has been extremely influential in the ESP work on genre analysis. A key aspect of this definition is the notion of genre as a class of communicative events with some shared set of communicative purposes.


A genre-based approach provides students with knowledge of the organizational and linguistic features of genres.
It moves from linguistic description to explanation and understanding of why genres are shaped the way they are and how they achieve their particular communicative goals.

In this approach, it is important that teacher donīt begin with analyses of decontextualized examples of genres, but make it clear from the start that genres exist in and for particular discourse communities.(JOHNS,1997)


To summarize, a genre-based approach aims to incorporate discourse and contextual aspects of language use and needs to include a flexible, rather than static view of genres , one that takes as its starting point the context of production and interpretation of the text , rather than just patterns of organization and linguistic features of the text.

Burns and Joyce (1997) describe the basic stages of designing a genre-based course:

1- Identify the overall context of language use
2- Develop goals or aims
3- Note the sequence of language events within the particular context
4- List the genres arising from this sequence
5- Outline the sociocultural knowledge that students need in the particular communicative context
6- Record or gather samples of the genres on which the course will focus
7- Develop units of work related to these genres and develop the lerning objectives to be achieved
