Subject: Task 11

Explain what a genre-based approach is.

The first idea that came to my mind about the genre-based approach was that it is a branch of the Communicative Approach. However, it is suited for developing reading and more specifically writing. The learners are presented with original texts of a certain genre at each time, and this proximity of the texts would make the learning task easier.

The proximity of the texts that I refer is the characteristics of the texts that gather them in the same genre. So a group of texts from the same genre will motivate the students, since the reading will become easier because of the shared characteristics.

Students with difficulty recognizing the meaning of the whole text will be especially happy with this approach. Sometimes the students can understand isolated phrases but lack the meaning of the full text. Reading a text of a genre that he/she already knows the characteristics will help the student to locate the global meaning.
