Explain what a genre-based approach is.

Genre-based approach is a group of ideas that show that the language can be acquired through the use of texts of different genres. It works with texts from the beginning, which are authentic texts that represent genres that are used outside the language classroom. Genre-based approach focus on the development of vocabulary and it is based on writing. This approach requires that before attempting to write in a particular genre, the students have been exposed to different genres by reading, analyzing and discussing examples of it. The idea is that when working with texts of several types of genres, the students develop competence to use the language in different contexts. According to Chris Gallagher genre based approach “is an approach that raise students’ awareness of the linguistic features of a genre and thus allows them to develop literacy across a variety of genres they will encounter in any curriculum, or even in non-school environments.”
