12_ Task

Examine one textbook and choose a good communicativie activiti. Describe it and the classify that activity according to the types presented by Littlewood.

Activity: “Finding you way’ – giving direction. Exercise b. pag. 11

In this activity there are 18 pictures of specific places (arrivals, car hire desk, departures, flight information desk, left luggage, restaurant, baggage check-in desk, currency exchange desk, duty free shop, international telephones, lost property office, nursery, security check, baggage claim, customs control, first aid room, passenger check-in desk, toilets). In pairs the students are suppose to give directions to each other. In this case one of the students is suppose to ask for information (the choice of places it is up to him/her) while the other one provides the information or gives the direction. So, the students are supposed to use phrase such as ‘take the first/second/third turning on the left/right’, ‘go past the....’, ‘it’s next to /opposite the...’, ‘go down/straight on’.
Considering the types of activities present by Littlewood, this activity may be classified as ‘discovering sequences or location’. So as Littlewood’s activity this one has also as purpose to make the students discover locations with a set of pictures. Howeve, differently from the activity presented by Littlewood, in this activity the students are not suppose to identify the position of each other on the map, but to know how to give/ask for information into a real context of communication.
