TASK 12
NAME: CAROLINA ROSA PANSINI
DATA: 07/05/2003

The activity that I chose is from the book English File upper-intermediate, Oxford University Press. In this activity students are going to work with a reading passage. The title of the text is “ The man who destroyed mealtimes”. It talks about Richard McDonald, who founded the McDonald’s restaurant chain and also the success of the McDonald’s restaurants all around the world.

The activity is called “Better read” and it is on page 108 from English File Upper-intermediate.

Separating fact from opinion

A - You are going to read a text about McDonald’s. Before you read, in pairs, answer the questions.

1 – How many McDonald’s are there in your town?
2 – How successful are they?
3 – How do McDonald’s market their product?
4 – What do they use to attract customers?
5 – How often do you go to a McDonald’s?
6 – What do you think of …
- the quality of food?
- the atmosphere of the restaurants?
7 – Do you think they offer value for money?
8 – What do you think are the main reasons for the company’s success?

B – Read the text. Underline anything about the company which is clearly just the writer’s opinion (not a fact). In pairs, have you underlined the same things? What are the writer’s three main criticisms of McDonald’s? Do you agree with them?

C – In pairs, explain the highlighted phrases in the text. Underline other new words and guess the meaning from context.

D – Talk to a partner.

1 – Explain the title of the article. Do you think it’s a fair description of Richard McDonald?

2 – Is the traditional family mealtime disappearing in your country? Why?

In my opinion, this activity is a functional communication activity, because to do it learners need to use language to achieve a communicative purpose, which, in this case, is to discuss and give opinions about McDonald’s restaurants.

According to Littlewood, this activity can be classified as using language to process information. Because its purpose is to discuss and to evaluate the issue presented in the text in order to solve a problem or reach a decision. The Learner has to answer the questions and discuss the possible answers and decide on the most appropriate one. And to do it, the learner has not only to analyze information, but also argue, justify and persuade in order to reach a common decision between him and your partner. As a result learners can improve their ability to express their opinions orally through the foreign language.
