TASK 12

According to Littlewood (1981:39), functional communication activities place learners in a situation where they need to use language for a well defined communicative purpose.
Examine one textbook and choose a good communicative activity. Describe it and then classify that activity according to the types presented by Littlewood.

CIRCLE CONVERSATION

Many students, specially low-level learners, either will not volunteer to speak or will have difficulty choosing a subject. The Circle Conversation activity provides students with a subject and promotes a semifree conversation.

Levels - any
Aims - develop fluency by balancing the risk of free conversation with the security of a structure
Class time – 10-15 minutes
Preparation Time – none
Resources – none

Procedure
1.Ask students to sit in a circle. For a large class, first demonstrate Circle Conversation with a small circle (12-20 students), and then have the other students make additional circles.
2.Nominate a topic and say something about it. For example if the topic is coffee, you could say, "I usually drink about three cups of coffee a day”, or more simply "I like coffee"
3.Have the student sitting to the left of the teacher continue by saying something about the same subject. (It is permissible but not necessary to include the topic word.)
4.Do not permit students to ask questions at this time. In this way the speaker’s turn moves around the circle with each student talking about the same subject. Unless the teacher imposes a time limit, students may say as little or as much as they please.
5.When everyone has spoken, have the student to the left of the teacher nominate a new subject and say something about it. In this way, not only does the speaker rotate but so does the role of topic initiator.

According to Littlewood, this activity is the type of sharing and sharing and processing information.
