Subject: Task 8

I studied English in the High School for seven years with many teachers.
There, the focus was on reading and writing in individual tasks.
The main goal was learning the grammar and vocabulary.
In the same period, I enrolled in an extra course and there I practiced the speaking and listening and improved my English.
In the Fale, I did three stages of English and actually I’m doing Portuguese because I’m very introvert and have difficult to speak in English. In my classroom experiences I developed sociolinguistic and functional competence mainly.
I have tried out many ways of learning English by myself with music, tv and movie, but the most effective so far has proved to be learning through reading.
First of all, attentive reading can help one build up one's vocabulary. As we read more, we will inevitably encounter words and expressions that we have never learned before; and by making sense of them through the context or by later referring to some sort of dictionary, we will notably increase our vocabulary in a very short span of time.
A second benefit of reading extensively is that one can cultivate in oneself a sense of the language and of the particular language flow peculiar to that target language.
Reading also helps writing. As you expand your vocabulary, you have more idiomatic words or expressions at your command for you to use when you write.
