THE LEXICAL APPROACH

The lexical approach concentrates on developing learners' proficiency with Lexis, or words and word combinations. It is based on the idea that an important part of language acquisition is the ability to comprehend and produce lexical phrases as unanalyzed wholes, or "chunks," and that these chunks become the not analyzed information in the student's mind by which they perceive patterns of language traditionally thought of as grammar. This approach believes that the interaction between Lexis, grammar and phonology affect on how learners store new language.
The Lexical Approach develops many of the fundamental principles advanced by proponents of the Communicative Approach. The most important difference is the increased understanding of the nature of Lexis in naturally occurring language, and its potential contribution to language pedagogy.
The most important principals of the lexical approach are:

1. Language consists of grammaticalised Lexis, not lexicalised grammar.
2. Constructing language is to make many "chunks" mixing grammar and vocabulary.
3. A central element is to develop in students their ability to "chunk" language in a proper way.
4. Successful language is searched rather than accurate language
5. Receptive skills, particularly listening, are given enhanced status
6. In the lexical approach, Lexis in its various types is thought to play a central role in language teaching and learning.
7. First and second language comparisons and translation—carried out chunk-for-chunk, rather than word-for-word— are aimed in order to reach language awareness.
8. Guessing the meaning of vocabulary items from context.

An important observation is that it is suitable for any language.
I really never thought about learning or teaching a language in that way. Maybe it would be interesting but I think that a "chunk-salad "could occur sometime and the student would be obliged to stop and start again looking for the wrong "chunk" so he could modify it and go along.
