Compare the two texts and give your own opinion about how language is acquired.

The language acquisition is presented in different ways by the two texts. Vera Menezes asserts in her article, that takes acquisition and learning are parts of the same system. She argues that many factors like social distances, culture, intelligence, motivation and others are determinants for an effective or ineffective learning or acquisition. She points out that many authors, such Nunan and Larsen-Freeman, take language acquisition as a complexity based on complex system or chaos theory: small changes into the language process can result in large differences into the language acquisition; and it would have an order in all surround itself. This would take place because the language is a process of continual restructuring. She shows the learning as a complex process, formed by systems and subsystems. They are connected and depend on each other to work. The combinations that are allowed in this process can have good results or no; it will depend of the learner. This model of language acquisition also has its own characteristics: it is a non-linear, is adaptive and without pre-determinate results. The learner also has a different role here: he is the most important one in the learning process and not only an object that had to adapt himself to acquire a language.
In the “Input Hypothesis” the learning process is viewed as something that works like the laws of cause and effect: first the learner receives and after produces something. In this approach the learning process is evaluated, results are charged and situations are created or modified to study some subject. Krashen, in some points of this theory, says that the second language can be adapted to be comprehensible to the learner. The result of this attitude can be a simplification of the language and consequently the final result will be a superficial knowledge about a language. While the “Fractal Method” presented by Vera Menezes is a process of continual restructuring, “Input Hypothesis” has its studies structured and makes the learner adapt to the process. According to the second theory, acquisition would be a subconscious process, that is, second language is acquired naturally through meaningful interaction – like occurs with the primary language; Learning would be a result of formal instruction and conscious knowledge of the language. Input Hypothesis has its studies structured and makes the learner adapt to the process.
The Fractal Model of language acquisition presented by Vera Menezes, where the learning of a language does not have a pattern to follow is a better way to acquire another language because one didactic method can work with a student and cannot work with another. The success or no of the method has relation with internal characteristics of the learner. Language is acquired based on stimulus, motivation and on the learners’ needs and feelings. Factors as the combinations of the fractals will interfere in different ways in the learning process.
