Task 6

Describe the design of a prototypical communicative course.

The communicative approach has to use the students as a focus of the class, and it should be adapted to suit the learner’s needs. It has emphasis on speaking and therefore there has to be an environment where the students can try many skills, and those speaking activities should be based upon the students’ personal experiences, opinions and ideas, including a communicative purpose to each activity. It is important to provide a clear topic and it does not need to be necessarily controversial in order to catch the students’ attention. It has to be interesting to the students. It is also important to use a discussion pyramid in order to make the students repeat it because By repeating the speaking activities, students gain confidence in each task and have the opportunity to do it again, thus getting better each time. In addition, doing something better or saying something that you could not say at the beginning of the class is quite simply LEARNING. When it comes to grammar teaching, there are two types, deductive and inductive. How to use one of them depends on the complexity of the grammar, the students’ needs and the learning environment. It is important to use some grammar instruction when it comes to second language acquisition.
It is important to focus on the meaning first, because it is learned through meaningful interaction, leaving it up to the students to look for the confirmation for themselves, because of the cognitive processes involved in this type of learning the approach is very challenging and motivating.
