DESCRIBE THE DESIGN OF PROTOTYPICAL COMMUNICATIVE COURSE

THE GOAL

Communicative competence should be the goal of the communicative course. It means teaching students to perform communication in such way that requires knowing more than linguistic competence. It also requires knowing when and how to say what to whom.

Communicative course aims to help students to use language to solve their problems in the real world. The teacher achieves his objective in this course when he enables learners to communicate in the target language.

TEACHER’S ROLE

Teacher works in this class as an adviser. He facilitates and promotes communication in the classroom. He should be ready to answer students’ questions and to monitor their performance. The teacher has the responsibility to plan the course with long-term objectives. Such objectives should be suitable to the students’ needs. He also has to choose communicative activities that are compatible with the age and level of his students.

LEARNER’S ROLE

This kind of course is known as student-centered-method. The teacher’s role is less dominant than their students. That is the reason why they are motivated to communicate during all class, to negotiate meaning, to interact with their classmates and teacher and to try to make themselves understood and in understanding others. One interesting point of this course is that students are responsible managers of their own learning.

COMMUNICATIVE ACTIVITIES

The speaking activities should be planned based on students’ personal experiences, opinions and ideas. In addition to it, each activity should present communicative purpose and to promote interaction between classmates. Doing this, students become more motivated and engaged in the activities. For example, during a discussion in class, teacher should choose topics that are relevant to the students’ needs and interests. That is the reason why teachers should know better their students, their interests and their objectives of studying language. Such activities can be games, role-plays and problem-solving tasks.

MATERIAL

The material used in communicative course should be authentic reading, like magazines, readers, Internet pages and newspapers. Listening of ‘real-life’ situations or about texts that bring purposeful and relevant information. The use of videos, DVD’s and displays are also very important and useful for this kind of course. Especially pictures, photos and posters, because they can create an adequate environment to what is being teaching in class, realia.
