Subject: TASK 6 - PROTOTYPICAL COMMUNICATIVE COURSE - RENATA BAHIA - LET 175C

After some readings I found many interesting aspects in order to describe a design of a communicative course. The aspect that most called my attention, in relation to everything that we have been learning about communicative approach is that the learners are used as the main focus of the class. The communicative approach to language teaching has a strong emphasis on speaking linked to activities based on students' personal experiences, opinions, needs, ideas and interests.
In terms on teaching grammar, there are two main approaches (deductive or inductive) and the choice the teacher will make depends on many factors. The choice depends on the complexity of grammar rules, the students' needs and the language learning environment. It's also important to say that highlight that languages are not learnt as discrete items, presented out of context but are acquired through meaningful interaction.
In terms of learner centred teaching and materials - It's the teachers the responsibility to plan the course with long termobjectives, in spite of teaching individual lessons that are not part of a bigger picture.
The learning environment is also very important since the moment that he student walk through the school's door. The student should feel like he is in an English speaking environment. In addition to this, it's very important to motivate the students with interesting materials. The usage of authentic reading and listening texts should be chosen and the communicative activities should encourage the students to participate as much as possible. The teachers should also help the students to negotiate, discuss, give opinions and speculate in real communicative situations. The teachers should not let the material drive the lesson, the students themselves are allowed to express their ideas, feelings and beliefs.
In terms of exercises, they should be meaningful and realistic, the teachers should be sure that exercises model realistic tasks and realistic language use. The activities needs to be adequately prepared.
Finally it's quite important the idea that the focus on an authentic communicative task is on using language to communicate, not talking about language.
