HOW WE CAN TEST COMMUNICATIVE COMPETENCE.

As Communicative Competence is the ability to know how to use language appropriately, to use and respond to different types of speech and to deal with the knowledge of rules of speaking. We should use some kinds of test that measure how learners use language in real life situations. So these tests have to check if the learners are able to use language appropriately instead of measuring grammatically correct sentences. It means learners have to communicate something to someone that is suitable for a particular situation. For example: To be polite – “Would you mind closing the door, please?” – instead of: “Close the door!” It is a way of testing productive skills in Communicative Competence. In order to test receptive skills, teachers should use tests that can check if the students can understand the communicative content of the speaker or writer rather than on specific details. So students will be able to respond to different types of speech acts (requests, apologies, thanks and invitations). Role-play is a good activity to test productive skill as well as receptive skill.

We can conclude that, to test Communicative Competence we have to check if the student is able to give and receive information, express and elicit opinions.
