Task 14: How can we test communicative competence?

Testing language has traditionally taken form of testing knowledge about language. Instead of testing if the testee knows how to use the language – not only the ability to form correct sentences but to use them at appropriate times – the tests usually test (only) if the student is able to produce grammatical sentences.

Communicative tests are intended to be a measure of how the testees are able to use language in real life situations. So, the testees must both comprehend and respond in real time, proving appropriateness and understanding the communicative intent of the speaker or writer. It’s important to prepare a test that reflects the communicative situation in which the testees are likely to find themselves and also a good material that covers the sorts of tasks the students will be asked to perform during the test. But we (teachers) must be careful about the tasks: real life situations don’t always have objectively right or wrong answers, and so band scales need to be developed to evaluate the results.
