15th task – Testing

How can we use portfolios to evaluate our students’ progress?

As portfolios are collection of our students work, we, teachers, can evaluate their performance over the time. Although most of the portfolios are based on written materials, the main purpose of them is to evaluate the students’ learning through their development in the four skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. Thus, through portfolios, teachers can see how the students learning are doing, so that they can change the curricula, if it is necessary, in order to improve the learning of the students. Besides, portfolios give the students the opportunity to improve their own learning by allowing them to check by themselves what they have done throughout their learning. In other words, the students can learn with their own work recorded into portfolios. So, it makes the students get involved in their own learning process.
In summary, portfolios may be used a tool in which the teachers can measure the students learning progress, and make decisions about what can be done in order to develop better the student’s learning process, and may be useful to the students for providing them ways to reevaluate their own learning progress.
