The tiny otter surveyed the snow-blanketed landscape quickly. “Come on, Watertrat, it’s all clear!”
A dark brown otter peeked shyly from behind a pine tree. He was also little (no bigger than a tree stump), with deep brown eyes. “I don’t wanna, Dakkan!” he protested.
The first otter, Dakkan, beckoned more energetically. Not much bigger than his friend, he was a sandy brown, with sky-blue eyes that carried a roguish twinkle in them. “Aw, c’mon Watertrat! There’s no foxes out there!”
The small, dark otter reluctantly followed his companion. “My daddy’s not gunna like this, Dakkan.”
Dakkan shrugged it off. “It’s worth it. I found a new place t’play!”
Forgetting what his “daddy” might think, Watertrat walked more eagerly. “New?” he inquired excitedly.
“Yep!’ replied Dakkan. It’s da best snowslide inna world. Follow me!”
The young otters scampered off to play, leaving behind their families who slept peacefully. They did not realize, however, that they were being observed.
About thirty foxes hid in a snow-blanketed thicket of thorns. All of them had the normal orange hue of a red fox, except for their leader. About a head taller than any of the others and twice as strong was a huge fox with fur black as night, but rough and unkempt. He wore a red silk tunic of high quality, complemented by a waist sash of a darker red, through which a wide-bladed sword was thrust. The metal was rusting slightly and there was a chip or two on the blade, but this only made his general appearance rougher.
This black fox turned to the others. “’No foxes out there’ is it? I’ll teach the little stinkers what ‘no foxes’ looks like!” he sneered.
His followers sniggered evilly. The unofficial second-in-command, a fox with a black left paw and a chunk out of his ear, grinned widely, showing crooked fangs. “Aye, Shadowfang!” he agreed. “We’ll show ‘em how ‘no foxes’ can introduce ‘em to a life of slavery!”
“Aye…” Shadowfang’s expression was dreamy as he contemplated two young, strong otters doing all his work. “Righto! Let’s go then!”
Moving stealthily from shadow to shadow, the foxes set off after the unwary Dakkan and Watertrat.
Dakkan had led Watertrat to the top of a large hill, where they could slide down onto the frozen river below. He turned to grin at his pal. “See? It’s da best snowslide inna world!”
Watertrat did not need to agree verbally; he simply squealed with delight and launched himself onto the snowy slope. Dakkan followed, sliding alongside Watertrat on his belly.
Shadowfang watched the small creatures as they slid on the hill. Whispering hastily to his band, they departed from their hiding place and climbed down the steep slope.
Watertrat and Dakkan hit the bottom of the hill and slid onto the icy river. Giggling, they brushed snow off their little blue tunics as they sat up. “Let’s climb up and do it again!” cried Dakkan.
“Methinks you’re not goin’ anywhere, young ‘un,” sneered a low, grating voice.
The two otters swung around in shock! There, surrounding them on the banks of the river, were a gang of foxes, all sniggering wickedly. The huge black fox spoke again. “C’mon with us, liddle ‘uns. Your momma an’ daddy told us to come get you for ‘em.”
Watertrat, trembling, tried to hide behind his friend. Dakkan, however, stood up straight and puffed out his little chest. “MY mommy told me dat foxes never tell the truth. They all lie! I don’t believe you!!” The small tan-hued otter stuck his little pink tongue out at the black fox.
Shadowfang was unused to such insurrection – his followers always obeyed without question. Dakkan’s insult had touched a nerve, and the fox instantly reacted. “You rotten little slobberjaw!!” Shadowfang growled. “Thickheaded rabble, attack if you want these insolent wretches t’do your work around here!” he called to his band.
The foxes leapt forward onto the ice, keen on catching the two otters and turning them into slaves. However, none of them expected the ice to be so slippery. All of them went down onto the cold, hard, frozen river with a bump. Watertrat and Dakkan took off, running along the river toward a hole in the ice. If only they could reach it, the two otters could dive into the water and swim away safely. Cursing under his breath at his band’s stupidity, Shadowfang dug his claws into the ice and sprinted forward, front claws wide open and ready to grab the two young otters. Several foxes from his band were also able to regain their balance and give chase.
Dakkan chanced a look over his shoulder. “C’mon Watertrat! We gotta go faster…big ol’ fox is faster ‘n us!”
