Shadowfang had indeed gained on them. He threw himself into a flying tackle and grabbed Dakkan. They slid several yards on the ice before stopping, but Dakkan had already begun to kick and punch.
Watertrat stopped and watched, horrified. At that moment, Blackpaw, the second-ranking fox, pounced, knocking the young creature over.
Dakkan, furious at having been caught, struggled and punched with all his might. He kicked Shadowfang in the nose, who bellowed and loosened his grip. The light-furred otter squeezed free and managed to beat the black fox to the hole in the frozen river. The fox snarled with barely contained rage as Dakkan swam under the thick layer of ice, out of reach and pulling faces.
Watertrat wasn’t so lucky. Blackpaw held onto him tightly, and tied him up with a rope that the fox had handy. The little brown otter could barely move, let alone get away. Dakkan watched sadly as the foxes made off with his friend, knowing that if he so much as showed a whisker above the ice, the same fate would befall him.

Back at the otter den, the families of Dakkan and Watertrat had awakened and found the young otters missing. Knowing that the two young creatures frequently wandered off early in the morning, nobody was particularly alarmed. Almost nonchalantly they organized a search for Dakkan and Watertrat.
When they found Dakkan the little otter was sitting on a stump, head in paws, alone.
Dakkan’s father, Silverclaw, reached him first. “Dakkan, there you are! Where’s your friend Watertrat?” he inquired in a deep yet gentle voice.
Dakkan looked up, his lower lip trembling, and he covered his head with his paws again. “Watertrat ‘n’ me went out to play. We didn’t know this was gunna happen!” he sobbed.
Silverclaw’s brow furrowed. “What happened, son? Where is Watertrat?” His voice carried a barely distinguishable undertone of worry.
Dakkan sniffed and wiped his snout with the back of his paw. “Me ‘n’ Watertrat played on da big snowslide. When we got to d’bottom, the foxes was there. Big huge black one almost got me, an’ ‘nother fox got Watertrat but he din’t get away! The foxes took Watertrat away, an’ I hid.”
Silverclaw massaged his temples with his paws. Watertrat had been kidnapped by foxes! He hadn’t even been aware that foxes were roaming this part of the forest. What was to be done? The grown otter placed a rough paw on his son’s quaking shoulders. “There, there, son,” he soothed. “Your ol’ daddy’s gonna get Watertrat back, you’ll see.
Dakkan stood and tried to dry his eyes. “I’m gunna help!” he cried determinedly.
Silverclaw tried to hide a grin, despite the circumstances. “No, Dakkan, you’re too young to go out and fight foxes. You have to be this high first.” The rugged otter held out a paw at shoulder height.
Dakkan protested in despair. “But I’ll be old then!” He tugged a tiny knife free from his belt and brandished it. “I wanta save Watertrat now!!”
Smiling gently, Silverclaw scooped his son into his paws. “You, Dakkan, are going home while I see what can be done about Watertrat.”
Without complaint, Dakkan allowed himself to be carried back to the otters’ camp.

*(oh and btw, I'm still working on transferring the next bit from my notebook to the comp, so it might take awhile...I'm never on Word!*
