I have not been fortunate to read the book, but based on what you wrote about your feeling, I can attest the pain of a family broken can never go away. It has been sixty years now, and it is still there. Worse, even when one can pick oneself up, the guilt of not able to lift one's siblings lingers to the end. Who's to blame and who is to be forgiven? The dark side of humanity. That is even more difficult to reconcile.
