Subject: FF Challenge: "The Way It Was Always Meant To Be"

Okay I might suck at this... but I thought I would give it a whirl lol. I hope its not to long lmao... I tend to get carried away lol.

_____

“The Way It Was Meant To Be”

Matt and Rachel walk in the door setting their boxes on the floor. They look up to see their parents dancing. Matt clears his throat. “Is this why people have kids? To do the manual labor?”

Nora laughs. “Well it is one of the many joys of parenthood, yes.” Nora kissed Bo’s cheek. “Are there any boxes left in the car?”

Rachel laughed. “Yes… you two own more CD’s and records then most music stores! There are about three boxes of them in the car.”

Bo grabbed Nora’s hand. “Come on Red we will get those… they are our most prized possessions.”

Rachel laughed. “Wait… I thought that was supposed to be us children…”

Bo stopped at the door, his mouth dropping open. “Uh yes of course… children… and music…” Nora grabbed his hand.

“Come on smooth talker we have boxes to get!” As they left Rachel and Matthew started to laugh.

Rachel moved some boxes over to the coffee table in front of the sofa. “So Matt, how are you doing with all this? It has to be quite an adjustment.”

He walked over to her to help unpack the boxes. “What do you mean?”

She shrugged. “Well you have never lived with mom and Bo under the same roof.”

He smiled. “It’s cool… so far so good. It‘s not really all that different.”

She turned to him and grinned. “Oh give it time…”

Matt furrowed his brow. “What do you mean?”

She laughed. “Well lets see… your dinner will consist of take out…”

He laughed, “Nothing new there.”

“True… but then there are the awkward moments.”

“What?”

She laughed. “Lets just say… be sure to knock before you enter a room.”

He made a disgusted look. “Ugh … seriously?”

“Oh yeah…trust me. Then there is the dancing.”

“I am learning that one quickly Rach. Their music sucks!”

“Oh come on… its not that bad.” She turned towards the radio when Good Golly Miss Molly came on and started to laugh. She started to move to the music, and held out her hand to Matthew.

He looked her up and down. “What?”

“Dance with me kid… this was one of mom and Bo’s wedding songs.” He rolled his eyes and took her hand. They started dancing around the room laughing.

Bo and Nora turned the corner walking towards the Garrett. They heard the music playing and smiled at one another. Bo shifted the boxes in his arms and opened the door. The site before them made their mouths drop and they stood their in shock. As Nora watched in shock she whispered .

“Bo?”

He blinked rapidly. “Yeah Red?”

“Should children with our DNA dance like that?”

He shook his head. “Uh… I don’t know. Maybe it’s not inherited.”

She sighed. “Oh… so they got our eating habits… but not our dance skills? That’s so sad…”

He laughed and walked through the door. “Nice moves kids… you’re no Fred and Ginger, but…”

Matt looked at him perplexed. “Who?”

Nora held her hand to her heart mockingly. “Oh good grief… “

Rachel laughed and walked over to Nora placing a arm around her shoulders. “It’s okay mom… I know who they are.” She walked over to the coffee table. “How about we start unpacking this stuff before we bring another load. Otherwise there will be no room to move in here.” She starts removing the contents of the box. “You two sure are pack rats!” She turned towards Nora. “Please don’t tell me you still have that dead fish.”

Bo laughed which earned him a glare from Nora. “Excuse me… but that was very traumatic for me!”

Matt stopped what he was doing. “Mom… are you talking about the fish we buried at the old house?” This caused Bo to laugh even harder.

Rachel laughed and continued to unpack. “Look at all this stuff“… she pulled out a few ribbons… ”You two sure were in a lot of dance contests.”

Nora smiled at Bo. “To bad we don’t still have that TV.”

Bo laughed. “Now that was some prize.”

Rachel removed a handful of stuff and placed it on the table, but stopped when it made a loud noise. She dug through the pile, “What on earth is this?”

Bo and Nora looked over… the site of it made the air catch in Bo’s throat. “That’s uh… a brick…”

Matthew frowned. “A brick? That’s a odd memento.”

Nora drew a ragged breath and cleared her throat. “I… uh… I’m going to go take a shower, I feel all grimy.” She exited the room quickly. Matthew stood their unaware of what just happened. Rachel looked over to Bo and frowned.

“Bo… is that…” Bo nodded sadly. Rachel nodded in understanding, she new that she had unpacked a unpleasant memory. She stood quickly. “Well… umm Bo are we done with the child labor for today?”

Bo smiled. “Yeah you two are relieved of duty.” Rachel turned to Matthew.

“What do you say I treat you to dinner and a movie… and then a sleepover at your sisters new digs?”

Matthew nodded. “Sounds good to me. Dad?”

Bo walked over and ruffled his hair. “Sure bud… that’s fine. Have a good time with your sisiter.”

Matthew grabbed his coat. “Cool… tell mom I said bye.” He walked out the door, when Rachel stopped and turned towards Bo.

“Bo I’m sorry…”

He smiled sweetly at her. “It’s alright sweetheart. We are going to have to acknowledge the bad stuff… so we can move on to the good stuff.” He kissed her on the cheek and watched her close the door behind her.

He turned around and looked at their new home. “The good stuff.” He smiled as a light bulb went off in his head. He scribbled Nora a note and hurried out the door.

~~~~~
About twenty minutes later Nora came out from the bedroom. She looked around the empty, yet cluttered room. “Good one Nora… you ran everyone off.” She shook her head and walked over to the sofa. She picked up a piece of paper.
Red,
Went out to grab some stuff. Be back soon!
She reached out and ran her hand over the box in front of her. She reached inside and pulled out the thing which caused her to run out of the room earlier.
She was still sitting in the same spot ten minutes later when Bo came through the door carrying a large box.
He smiled at her. “Hiya gorgeous!”
She smiled “Hiya handsome. Where’s Matthew, didn’t he go with you?”
Bo set his box down. “No I relieved the kids of duty for tonight… he’s spending the night with Rachel.” He set his box down and sat on the sofa next to her.
He looked at Nora and she seemed to be a million miles away. “Red? Honey what’s wrong?”
She starred at the box. “Nothing… just thinking I guess.”
Bo followed her gaze. “Are you having regrets? About moving in together?”
Nora turned to him quickly and caressed his cheek. “Honey I have many regrets… but that’s not one of them.” She smiled weakly. Bo nodded and glanced at the box then back at her.
Bo studied her face. “So… you are thinking about the past huh?”
Nora shrugged. “Well… it’s kinda hard not to ya know?” Nora scooted off the sofa to sit on the floor bringing the box down to the floor beside her. She removed the contents and placed it on the table in front of her.
Bo moved down to sit next to her and pulled some stuff out of his box setting it on the table. He wriggled his eyebrows at Nora. She couldn’t help but laugh. “Chinese food huh? You must have read my mind.”
“No need to read your mind Red… I know it by heart.” He kissed her quickly. “So … you wanna talk about what’s in the box?”
“Nah… it’s just a bunch of silly stuff I saved from…”
“From when we were married?” Nora nodded as she picked up the piece of brick off the table.
She quickly wiped away a tear that ran down her cheek. “Pretty silly huh?” Bo popped a piece of egg roll into his mouth.
“Nah… I don’t think so.” He turned and grabbed something out of his box and placed it on the table.
Nora laughed. “You kept it too?” He smiled.
“Of course I did Red… it was a piece of us. I could never get rid of it.” She leaned in and kissed him deeply then pulled back and smiled at him. He drew a deep breath. “Actually… I…”
She looked at him and caressed his creased brow. “What?”
“Well I wasn’t going to tell you this, but… I tried to get the barn back for us.” Her smile beamed.
“You did?” Bo nodded.
“Yeah… but the new owners didn’t want to sell.” She giggled
“Well I can’t say I blame them… it was a great house. But I love you for trying.” She rummaged through the box while she ate her wantons and sesame oil. Bo smiled at her sadly.
“What else you got in there Red? I bet I can match you memento for memento!”
She rolled her eyes. “You are so competitive Bo Buchanan!”
They spent the next hour going through memories from their past. Sharing the good memories… and the bad. Bo was laughing at Nora’s last memento.
“I can’t believe you kept that!” Bo doubled over laughing. Nora turned towards him.
“And what is so funny about it?” He looked at her trying to keep a straight face.
“Come one Red! It’s a note saying that I went out to get bread and coffee!”
She held it to her heart. “Yes… but… it’s the first note you wrote me as my husband!”
He wiped the tears of laughter from his face. “You’re a nut Red! A hopeless romantic… and a nut!” She shoved him playfully.
“You’re a fine one to talk Buchanan!”
“What?”
She pointed to the pile of mementos on the table. "You saved the fishing lure I used from that time you took me fishing!”
“Hey, now, come on Red that was a historic event!” She nodded in agreement.
“You got that right!” She picked up the Chinese food containers and took them over to the trash bag by the door.
“I still think I have you beat in the memento department!” She turned and noticed that Bo was holding something in the palm of his hand. He grasped it between his fingers and held it up for her to see. She was speechless . She drew a shuttered breath and walked over to the balcony window… starring out. After a moment she found her voice.
“I … I though you would have chucked that out a window after what I did.” She wrapped her arms around herself to ward off the chill that settled in her bones. Bo walked over and wrapped his arms around her from behind.
“How could you think that honey? That was the happiest day of my life.” Nora sniffed away her tears.
“Mine too… and then I ruined it!” He rubbed her shoulders.
“I am just as much to blame for the end of our marriage Red!”
“Bo…” He turned her around in his arms.
“I meant it! What you did… yes the act it’s self was wrong… but I know that it came from your love for me, and you had the best of intentions. Me, on the other hand. I was cruel and pig headed… and I let my wounded pride rule over the love I have for you.” He let her out of his grasp and walked back over to sit on the sofa. He picked up his wedding band and starred at it. “We missed out on all these years together, because I was so stubborn and unforgiving. For years… I have sat by… knowing full well all the guilt you’ve hauled around, and how much it tore you apart…”
Nora sat next to him. “But you forget… I’m Jewish… guilt is what we do best.” He snickered.
He turned towards her, taking her face in his hands. “No… what you do best, is loving me. And I threw that away over one mistake.” He caressed her tear stained cheeks with this thumbs. “I’m sorry Red!” He drew her into his arms and held her tightly. She wrapped her arms around him and buried her face in the crook of his neck.
“I am so sorry Bo… I swear I never wanted to hurt you!” He squeezed her then pulled back.
“I know you didn’t honey.” He starred into her eyes. “I love you Red!” He leaned in to kiss her.
As his lips touched hers she whisper. “I love you too.” Her hand moved to the back of his head to draw him deeper into the kiss. After a few moments he ran his hands up her arms… to the top button of her pajamas.
“You still look sexy in flannel pajamas.” She pulled back and smiled, her eyes shinning.
“I’m glad you think so.” He leaned in again but she pulled back. “Oh and by the way… we are even in the memento department Buchanan.” She leaned over and grabbed a little box out of the larger one. She removed the lid and took out the contents, holding it up for him to see. His smile lit up his entire being.
“You kept it huh?” She smiled back.
“Of course… next to Matthew and your love… this is the most precious gift you ever gave me!” She leaned in and kissed him passionately as the strains of the familiar music filled the room. He pulled back and grinned.
“They are playing our song Red.” She was nibbling on his neck, not paying attention to the music.
“They are?” She continued her perusal of his neck.
“Of course they are… you’re still My Girl!” She pulled back hearing the music for the first time and smiled.
“And you’re still My Guy!” He stood and offered his hand to her.
“You better believe it Red!”
He pulled her close as they danced around the room… still in perfect sync with each other. Nora’s hands roamed over Bo’s shoulders and down his chest… undoing a button with each kiss she gave him. They kissed and caressed each other till the song ended and a new one began. Bo backed her up towards the sofa, and laid her down. Climbing over her, he caressed her cheek and smiled. “It isn’t our sofa… but I think it deserves a test run!” She laughed and pulled him down to her…
~~~~~

Nora and Bo laid on the sofa. Nora slipped his shirt over her head and snuggled closer to Bo under the covers. “God I missed you!”

Bo laughed. “Red you took the words out of my mouth.” She looked at him and grinned.

“Speaking of your mouth…” She pulled him into a passionate kiss just as the front door opened.

“Mom! Dad!… I… OH GOD!” He quickly closed the door as Rachel walked up behind him.

“Matthew… what are you doing?”

He blinked and stuttered. “I …. Uh…. you never mentioned that I would have to knock on the FRONT DOOR!” The meaning of his words became clear when she heard their mothers voice from the other side of the door.

“You can come in now!” Rachel started laughing when she opened the door and Matthew covered his eyes and ran to his room.

Rachel looked over at Bo & Nora smiling. Nora sat up straight fixing her clothes as Bo just laughed.

“Rikki… if you say ONE WORD!”

She held her hand out in a Mia Culpa gesture. “Hey… I think it’s only fair that Matthew be traumatized just as I was growing up!” Just then Matthew came racing out of his room, eyes locked on Rachel and speaking rapidly.

“I got my clothes can we go now…. Bye mom, dad!” They all watched as he raced out the front door.

Rachel looked at them and smiled. “Finally… everything is the way it was meant to be!” She winked and left.

Nora collapsed laughing on Bo’s shoulder. He laughed. “The way it was always meant to be!”

That was wonderful, Tammy! I really do hope that Matthew gets "traumatized" at some point ... LOL

Great use of mementos ... I still hope that they both have their pieces of the cornerstone.

Unfortunately (or fortunately?), Nora's piece should have been lost in the fire if the writers stay true to history.
