Subject: God Bless the Broken Road Part 44 (I think)

I really should start labeling my chapters better.

Here's a brief synopsis of what's gone on, since it's been so long since my last chapter:

Lee Ramsey is Commissioner of Police, Bo is working in a P.I. office with Rex.

Bo and Nora and Matthew were in family counseling, where both Bo and Nora are realizing there are still feelings. They initially started because Matthew found out about what happened between Bo, Nora, and Lindsay.

Bo and Nora were working together to figure out why evidence kept coming up missing in cases Nora was trying, they've followed the puzzle to Ramsey's doorstep.

Nora has been trying to get on with her life by going out with Larry Wolek, which Bo has not enjoyed seeing.

While Bo went following a lead in the Ramsey mystery, Nora came up missing. A short time later, so did Matthew.

Rex, Bo, and John are working together to find out what's happened to Matthew and Nora.

I think those are the highlights.

***************************************

Bo and Rex had finished going through the box of files and had found about a dozen convicts Ramsey had spoken on behalf of at their various parole hearings. Now they were brainstorming ideas as to why Ramsey would be in bed with these felons.

“I still think it comes down to money or power. Ramsey’s a greed-monger to the core. He wants to own this town-”

“For starters.”

“Yeah, for starters. He’s going to need muscle and money for that.”

“He can’t lead by example, but he can lead with an iron fist.”

“And suck the life right out of the citizens of Llanview.”

“You bet. It is the one thing that makes sense.”

“And, with your family’s wealth…”

“And, with the grudge that these men may be holding against Nora…”

“We’re not going to go there, Bo. We are going to find them. We are going to get them out of harm’s way, then we’re going to deal with Ramsey and these men.”

“If anything happens to either one of them…” Bo’s voice trailed off.

“The law will take care of them then,” Rex finished firmly. “Right?”

Bo replied with a simple, “Hm.”

“When we find Nora and Matthew, they are going to need you. So, you’re going to let John and the rest of the PD take care of Ramsey and his goons.” Rex studied Bo for several seconds as Bo reached for a picture of himself, Nora, and Matthew. “What am I missing?”

“What?”

“Something else is going on here.”

“I heard what you started to say to John. You stopped yourself.”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about, Balsom.”

“You said ‘right now I just want my son and the woman-’. The woman what, Bo?”

Bo let out a long sigh. “It doesn’t matter.”

“You love her. And it does matter. And once we find her and Matthew, you’re going to tell her.”

“Let’s just focus on finding them first.”

Rex studied Bo. He’d never seen his mentor look so lost or scared.

Meanwhile…

Nora struggled with the binds that tied her wrists behind her. She had a gag in her mouth, and her feet were tied to the legs of her chair. There was one bare light bulb hanging a few feet above her. The room reminded her of an interrogation room in a movie. Cold, grey, and intimidating. The only thing that kept running through her head was the message she left Matthew. She needed to get free and find him, to find out what these people had done with her son. She heard a commotion outside before the door flew open. A man came in and dropped a bound and gagged, unconscious Matthew onto the floor, chaining his handcuffed hands to a hook near the floor. Nora’s eyes grew wide and she tried letting out a scream, but it was muffled into the gag. The man heard her and turned to face her. She recognized him, but couldn’t place from where. He smiled creepily at her. He walked over and circled her.

“Here we are again. Thought you’d seen the last of me, eh?”

Nora tried to speak, but couldn’t through the gag.

“What’s that? Are you trying to apologize for taking the last 3 years of my life away? Well, that’s sweet.” He got down just inches from her face. “But I want you to experience just a little bit of the hell that I did….and I’m not the only one.” A Cheshire cat grin crossed his face and he reached his hand up and caressed the side of her face before slapping it lightly.

It hit her where she knew this man from. She had prosecuted him years earlier on sexual assault and menacing. Her breathing grew even faster as she tried to squirm away from his touch.

“Settle down, Counselor. If you keep breathing like that, you’re going to pass out! We want you to be aware of everything that’s happening so that you can enjoy it as much as we’re going to!” The man let out a laugh before leaving the room.

Nora looked down at her son, looking so helpless on the floor. She struggled against the ties binding her, but she wasn’t able to get free. She looked around hoping for some inspiration, but with her legs tied to her chair, and her chair bolted to the ground, it seemed like an effort in futility. Tears began streaming down her face. She squeezed her eyes tight to try and get them to stop, but they kept coming. She suddenly heard some movement in the corner and opened her eyes to see Matthew starting to come to. She let out some noise of her own as if to encourage him to wake up. His eyes fluttered open and he lifted his head. He looked about confused, assessing his surroundings, then saw his mother. He tried to move, but his hands were cuffed, and the chain that bound him to the hook was only a couple feet long. He moved his legs, and grimaced. He locked eyes with his mother. As scared as they were, they knew they were going to have to work together, somehow, to get out of this.

Bo’s phone buzzed, and he looked at the caller before answering, “John. Whatcha got? Please tell me some good news.”

“I wish I did, Bo. The information that you and Rex found was good. We checked with members of the parole board and confirmed that Ramsey was in on these guys getting out. It seems that their bank accounts increased significantly, for them anyway, shortly before each of these cons parole hearings.”

“How did you find this out?”

“I’ve still got some persuasive friends in low places. Let’s just leave it at that.”

“What else you got?”

“We ran some checks on Ramsey’s bank account. He’s got nothing, Bo, so he’s either hiding his money in his mattress or he’s one desperate man.”

“And we both know what happens when criminals are backed into a corner.”

“We’re not there yet, Bo.”

Bo heard someone in the background at John’s end of the conversation.

“Bo, I’m going to let you go. We might have a lead on where Matthew and Nora are. I will call you as soon as it’s confirmed.”

“John-!” But John had cut the conversation before Bo could get more details.

“What’s he got, Bo?”

“Not much new, but the trail is leading right to Ramsey.” Bo pushed himself up out of his chair. “Damn, it! Why the hell didn’t he just come after me? Why did he have to go after my family?”

“Easier marks.”

“What?!”

“I’m just saying. What would going directly after you have gotten him? Nothing. But, going after Matthew and Nora…he knew that would get you where you live. He’s got more leverage. More aces in the hole.”

Bo just shook his head and looked out the office windows. “I gotta get out of here.”

“Where are you going?”

“I don’t know. But I can’t just sit here.”

“I’m going with you.”

“Then let’s move. And bring those files. Maybe we can find more information.”

Several minutes later Bo and Rex were driving around in the car. Bo was firing questions at Rex about the cons that were helping Ramsey. Where did they work? Where were they from? Did they have a family? Where did that family live?

“This guy, ’Bubba’, they called him, he worked down on Broad Street at Miller Paper Processing and Recycling.”

“Wait a minute. That place went bankrupt about 3 years ago. That place has been sitting vacant ever since.”

“So?”

“So every other place these guys worked is still there. What if they are using this place as their hideout?”

“I guess it’s worth checking out. But, Bo, if this is the place, don’t you think we should call for backup?”

“I’ll give John a call. He said he was onto a lead. I’ll see if it matches ours.”

Bo dialed John.

“Yeah, Bo. I think we’ve got their location.”

“Miller Paper Pro-”

“Processing and Recyling,” John said finishing Bo’s sentence. “How did you figure it out?”

“Just following the evidence.”

“Once a cop-”

“Always a cop. Listen, John, I’m going to meet you there.”

“I don’t know if that’s a good idea, Bo.”

“You don’t actually think you can stop me, do you?”

“No. But that sounded like something you’d say to someone in your situation.”

Bo let out a small chuckle. “I’ll see you there in a few minutes. You have extra backup?”

“Ramsey’s unreachable-”

“For obvious reasons.”

“Yeah, so I’ve called in some friends. We’re going to work this out.”

“John, you can’t put your job on the line like this.”

“Bo, just as you can’t stay away, I can’t let you handle this by yourself.”

“Thanks, John.”

“Thank me once you’ve got Matthew and Nora safe at home.”

The two men hung up. Bo looked over at Rex, “I’m dropping you off at the Carriage House.”

“Excuse me?”

“I’m not getting you involved in this. You have Gigi and Shane to take care of. If anything happens to you-”

“Bo, you’re going to have to push me out of this car if you don’t want me to come along, and even then I will crawl my behind to your side.”

They were too close to the site at this point, and Bo didn’t want to waste any more time. “Fine, Balsom, but don’t get yourself killed.”
