There's an obit in Sunday's Boston Globe for a Larry Lemmel, husband of Jessica Tracey, who died July 21 after a fall, in Gosnell House Hospice in Scarborough, Maine. He was a graduate of Westminster Choir College and Yale University School of Music. No mention of Franconia, and his "signature achievement" was in founding Campus-Free College, later called Beacon College. My search-fu was weak on this one. Could this be "our" Larry Lemmel?

Hi folks. The idea is to gather in local areas, sync time and do Facebook live, twitter live, FaceTime and Skype. People in far away locations could join in too. We could met in restaurants or parks or a beach etc. I posted this on the FC PAGE on Facebook. I am not good at organizing. We have lots of us we are good at this. Morgan

- Hello All -- Jim Cordes ( alias Yevgeny ), 01:28:01 01/28/17 Sat (73.219.80.192)
Consciousness has a way of recycling memories, some from childhood, others of friends and experiences. Thus it is tonight, for some inexplicable reason while reading Look Homeward Angel by Thomas Wolfe, resting my eyes because the dam type on the pages is smaller each year, I thought of Franconia College and those who I met there.
Some years ago, I took my wife and daughter to the top of the hill to see the grand building, but it was gone. It had burnt to the ground and nothing remained but charred timbers, some steel and brick. The view was intact, how can one remove a view? I walked among the ashes and found a pane of glass that had actually been melted by the heat of the fire. It must have been a blaze that could be seen the length of the valley! Then the most odd thing happened.
I looked down and saw a piece of paper with some browning at the edges from heat but otherwise in good shape. It was a page from the Franconia College curriculum. How it survived is anyone's guess. I smiled. So much like those days.
I can't make up my mind if Franconia College was like the very top of a wave where it crests and throws up a spray, or if it was the bottom of a wave crashing into the coastline of society. They were tumultuous times. It was a crucible being there. In my case being sent there, as if to an alien outpost, because I'd left the New College three year bachelor program, and the draft was hunting bodies. I took a bus to Boston, then another up 93 where it pulled over and dropped me off in pitch blackness with stars overhead. I walked up the hill dragging a trunk of clothes, followed music through the woods to Xanadu and woke up in a new world.
Many kids were totally unprepared for the depths of a New Hampshire winter, unprepared for the pharmacology that rolled through our brains; but it was grand, it was tribal, sometimes lonely, loud as All Along the Watch Tower, my head was like the ping pong ball in the lounge... some names drift through my mind now, Batir, Fury, Donovan, Allen Strell. Doc Waterman my roommate who died of cancer of all things. He loved theater and novels. I wrote poetry under the name of Yevgeny and managed by hook and crook to hang a large driftwooded tree's root system from the ceiling of the New Dorm. We drove to a Muddy Waters concert at Goddard, or a full moon drive to Bard. Pretty girls, bridging the distance between Gloria Steinem, Joni Mitchell and Grace Slick.
The summer of '68 was spent at the Chicago Convention, Lincoln Park, trying to figure out how to play guitar which never worked out. Lenny Greene could play. I met a young lady and we drove West in her blue Mustang, clear across country and down the coast, stopping at Esalen Institute for a week learning about dolphin communications and body language. And on down the coast. By the time school began I found myself in the Orange County jail because the young lady had a film can of grass, remember those Agfa tin cans with the screw tops? I wrote the school asking if they would send the study materials so I could keep up. In a week I was on a plane trip home. Good thing, her father was on his way to California to meet me. Two letters later that relationship was over.
That's Franconia from my memories, sometimes disjointed, sometimes wonderous. Swimming in cold mountain streams, sitting on the floor in class, finding a spot to read, staying up much too late. Nick Howe's philosophy corner complete with a chair pulled from a Porche, climbing... no running up Mt. Lafayette. Wasn't there an all night debate between Engleman and Taub that resolved itself by a drive to Mt Agassiz for sunrise? If there wasn't its a good story.
Back to the present, its getting late and I'm sure I recall a few names looking over some of the posts here. I wish all who visit here the best.
Jim

- George Banks -- Mark Chain, 20:21:59 05/05/16 Thu (64.222.211.128)
For those not on FaceBook, Mark Shapiro posted there on Monday evening that George Banks, librarian at the College from 1969-72, died Sunday, in his Florida home. Mark had been there for some weeks taking care of George after a surgery heÕd had, and was with him when he died.
George and I met at the College Š early Õ69, as I recall - and one of his fondest memories through all the years since was of a Community Meeting in the Dining Hall where the talk was of students going down to Boston to panhandle for money to help keep the College going.
In 1980, after having lived in Germany for several years, I came back to the States for 6 months to attend the poetics program at Naropa. After arriving and checking in with the Registrar, I headed for the library. Crouched down in the stacks, surveying the books, I suddenly hear a voice from behind me: ŅGlad to see you made it, MarkÓ. It was George, he was there for the Buddhist Studies, and was now the Naropa librarian. HeÕd known for months that I was coming, but saved it to spring on me. IÕd had no idea he was there. Good one, George! (Ginsberg, Orlovsky, Ted Berrigan et al were there, too, back then . . . it was quite a time.) And from that time on, George and I were never out of touch with one another for very long. He was a remarkable person and dearest friend.
Just weeks ago, he remarked that he felt very much at peace, and glad for the life heÕd had Š the family, friends, loves and adventures Š and was now looking forward to his Ukranian lady-friend of many years coming to visit again in the next weeks . . . Today IÕm remembering the last line of TedÕs ŅLast PoemÓ:
ŅLet none regret my end who called me friend.Ó

- Recalling the Reunion -- Howie, 23:10:54 08/25/15 Tue (98.216.19.41)
I'm assuming that there are others here not on FB besides myself. The reunion this year was a wonderful good-time-had-by-all event. It was low-key in the sense that there were few planned activities, but the Maplewood was large enough to have many places to hang out, indoors and out, and things just flowed at everyone's own pace.
For example, several people had talked about meeting at the New! Improved! Year-Round Polly's Pancake Parlour in Sugar Hill at 11:00 on Saturday. I got there a little early, just enjoying the fresh air, when I looked at the field across the road and a mama moose and her calf were trucking across the meadow. I was able to grab my camera, change lenses and squeeze off a couple of shots before they disappeared!
I met up with Dave Baldwin, we checked at Polly's and the wait was about an hour and a half, so we decided to move on. After a false start at the Dutch Treat (no breakfasts!) we grabbed a table on the porch of Wendle's, two doors down. Nice place! We were soon joined by Steve Kelsey, Earhardt and Sydney and Chris Roop. Spent quite a while recollecting and catching up, and laughing. A lot. Hearing that Alan Strell's sister was holding a yard sale of a bunch of his stuff that day, a few of us headed over to the Homestead. Strell's sister (her name escapes me) was happy that friends of his could own some if his stuff and was genuinely friendly. She even led a tour of his house - a wonder in itself. By then it was time to head back to the Brentwood for the group photo and we said our goodbyes. Jeff Gross did a great job getting everyone together in one place, then shifted slightly to the left, then again, and finally to the right place for a set of great photos. Could not have planned a nicer day!
The only thing that didn't go as expected was Saturday night. The ballroom was large and lovely and not air conditioned. It had been quite hot for the previous several days. The food was served buffet style and was excellent and plentiful, with red and white wine on the tables. But over a hundred people and the hot buffet only made the room toastier and borderline uncomfortable. Then the band set up. They were billed as The Wicked Smart Horn Band, who have been playing at Reunions since Y2K. The bad news was that no one knew who anyone was up there on the stage! The good news was that no one felt bad about hanging out outside, where the air was a whole lot cooler.
The organizers did a great job (I'm not going to name names, as I'm sure I'd invariably leave a few out) in creating a well organized, well run gathering of people and memories. Their hard work really paid off. Thanks!
On Sunday Morning, Mark Chain reminded us that the Time Capsule buried after the Y2K Reunion is scheduled to be retrieved in the year 2020. Hmmm....

Howie, Fred and all others folks who are working revising the Forum
There is discussion on Facebook regarding Black Mountain College. I visited their "Black Mountain College" web-site and it is a marvel. Alumni have one page of biography, there is publications, photos, and the web-site is very informative. I suggest that people take a look at it, before they start re-designing our Forum. Howie and Fred, it was a pleasure seeing both of you in Bethlehem. Reminded me of the 2000 and 2001 gatherings. See you in five years or less. Hope all is well.

- Reunion Go Fund Me account -- Melanie, 08:23:45 05/26/15 Tue (65.175.196.197)
Begun by Natalie Woodroofe:
Over the course of fifteen years, Franconia College (aka The Sin on the Hill/Fat City) shook and shaped the lives of perhaps 4,500 adventurous souls. Some quickly moved on, many left after graduating while others made the North Country their home. For a lot of us, connection to this crazy, brilliant, exasperating and exhilarating time hasn't faded away.
The rambling and ramshackled buildings are gone, but that doesn't break the bond or dampen our curiosity about how each other's lives have unfolded. This summer we will reunite in Bethlehem. Like the iconic Old Man of the Mountains, we can't be sure if/when we will have this opportunity again before we, too, depart for the big Main Building in the Sky.
Sadly, like the Dining Room when it went all meal tickety, there is no free lunch. The reunion has costs (the venue, entertainment, printing, etc.) associated with putting on this three-day party, and these get passed on to attendees.
But we don't want that to keep people from being there. That's why we've launched this GFM effort. Go here to check it out, donate to help others attend, or contact Natalie about how to ask for assistance.

- About Dave Rollins Now...... -- Eric Williams (Shocking!), 19:34:41 04/27/15 Mon (107.188.31.141)
I saw this post over in the Franconia College Facebook pages just today. It comes from Lance Stern, Class of 1977,who I happen to know, and who I saw, spoke with extensively, at the regional reunion in New York city last September. So, I know it is legit. Sure it is. What can I say? IT BLEW MY MIND. David Rollins was a classmate of mine, as he came, as I, in the Fall of 1972. Rollins would be in the class of 1976. Check this one out..... No Bullshit joke here!
http://www.gofundme.com/savethisvet
As many of us Baby Boomers move into our 60's, and beyond, I just thought that this would be worth listing here among fellow classmates. If anyone has any ideas or would like to help, well, this one is worth a look.

- RIP Joan ( Plattman ) Price -- bill manser, 13:08:25 04/11/15 Sat (71.172.169.30)
I am passing this on from a posting on Mors group website for the members of the community who have not heard this via Facebook already :
Joan went very peacefully at 4:08 am this morning with me, Leslie and Janet by her side, holding her hands and telling her it was ok. Right to the end she had us smiling.
We told her how much she was loved and how much she has touched so many lives. I don't think she could have ever imagined she'd go from having no one to having a family of so many wonderful, caring people.
She had a blast these past five months, and was completely humbled by all the love everyone showed her. More than anything else, she was beyond grateful that Isis is happy and safe in a new, loving home.
Thank you to everyone who cared, loved, visited, and sent cards, gifts, decorations, snacks and prayers. She was incredibly thankful too, and said it so many times.
We did good, everyone. We completely changed her life, and I know she changed many of ours.
And it all started with her love for one little black cat.
This was passed on on the 4th I believe but I was expecting someone else to post here earlier though that did not happen.
In the end Joanie had many friends from her cat group as mentioned in the earlier post that Lori put up here a while back around Thanksgiving time who helped her through her last days.
She will be missed by many of us as she was a true friend who almost always had a bright uplifting view of life aside from what was taking a toll on her in the last few years.
For those who remember her join me in saying good bye and knowing she has passed on to a better place now.

Classmates.... Got this in the mail today. That is, my Facebook 'in-box.' This may have already been posted here. I am not sure. Long time since I last posted my head in here. Anyway... Here it goes....
Dear Franconia College Community,
I am excited to post here that I am beginning my research phase for my project on Franconia College! My name is Julia Loonin (daughter of Larry Loonin) and I am a Master’s Student at Teachers College and my thesis paper is on Franconia.
I used the fall semester to learn about writing a thesis on an educational institution and now I will be going into the research phase of my paper wanting to know about your experiences and thoughts then and now.
I will be using three main methods to learn more about the college and community: survey, interviews and document analysis.
I’m hoping you might consider participating in the survey:
Please copy and paste this link to a new web page to access to survey:
https://tccolumbia.qualtrics.com/SE/?SID=SV_bgBo6HEngMZVuu1
Responding to the survey will be possible up until Friday, January 30th It consists of narrative based questions and will take between 15 – 20 minutes. I am most interested in your story and your experiences.
I know that some alumni are not on Facebook or are part of this group, so, if you will send this link to anyone who was in attendance at the college, it would be appreciated.
Additionally, as I mentioned, I am interested in collecting documents on and from Franconia. If you have any materials that you think would be important to this project, please let me know! You can reach me by email at
jpl2163@tc.columbia.edu.
Thank you in advance for your time in taking this survey. Please let me know if you have any questions.
All my best,
Julia Loonin

Alan peacefully left us this morning.
His sister Wendy sent out the following email around noon and hopes to have something posted on the FC Facebook page tonight.
"It is with heavy hearts that we inform you all that our brother Alan lost his courageous battle with cancer early this morning, Jan. 4, 2015. Alan had such a powerful will to live and lived life to the fullest... in a way that only "Strell" could. We have been amazed and comforted by all of his wonderful friends and family. All of the love and wonderful stories that have been shared have warmed our hearts, and, I'm sure, Alan's, as well.
Our plan is to have a celebration of his life sometime in the spring. We will keep you all in our thoughts and will let you know when and where this will take place. We hope that you will be able to join us then. We have some thoughts about this, but we are open to other suggestions.
We have tried to include everyone in this email, however, please feel free to pass this on to anyone who we may have failed to reach.

Hi,
I'm Alan Strell's sister, Wendy, and I'd like to contact anyone who is interested in learning about Alan. He has cancer and is about to go into a nursing home. This is a long shot, but I'm trying to find anyone who is a friend of his and may be interested in spending some time living at the homestead and taking care of Alan so that he can go home. At this point, he needs 24 hour care and desperately would like to go home, but needs help. My email is blocks5@hotmail.com. I know how crazy this sounds, but it's worth a try. If you know anyone who may be interested in helping him out, please contact me. Thanks.

As I have said elsewhere, I will also share here.... Just got finished hanging out this weekend past with my college classmates in New York City, who were students with me at Franconia College, Franconia, New Hampshire. It was an experimental 1970's-era small college that changed my life for the better in many ways, that made HUGE impact on me. Some of them, my classmates, I had not seen in nearly 40 years. It was a great time, indeed, and I was glad to be a part of it. That experience for me has started off this week on a high note. Just thought I would share this one here.

- The Easter Bunny came to Ambler -- Robert, FC 73', 09:53:05 04/22/14 Tue (71.230.22.72)
Hi Craige & Howie,
The Easter Bunny (Eric) arrived in Ambler by train on Saturday night. It was wonderful to see my old friend, he has aged very little and looks great. I had a home made Easter dinner waiting for him (baked ham with sliced cinnamon apples, twiced baked potatoes and baby carrots glazed in a B&B and butter sauce).
We told each other stories of our past adventures for hours while drinking mugs of Irish coffee. Around 2:30am we watched the F1 race from China. This was Eric's first time watching Formual One racing. It was fitting that Louis Hamilton won the race.
On Sunday, Eric and I watched and listened to a Miles Davis DVD that Eric brought me as a gift. I showed him pictures of my family and different projects that I have worked on. In the afternoon we drove up to my favorite tavern in Teford for a couple of beers. Eric got to meet some of my local friends and afterwards we went over to my design studio where I'll be putting the Lotus 7 back together.
(Howie, unfortunately my Lotus 7 will not be road worthy by Mid-May when I travel to New Hamshire. I invited Eric to join me on my up-coming trip, but he can not get time off for several months).
Story telling continued all day and into the night. Eric is truly a world traveler and has had much success in the broadcast industry in different countries. He had been living and working in Australia for sevral years. He returned to the United States a few months ago to work as the Chief Editor for an independent radio/televison station in New York City.
Around noon on Monday I drove Eic to the Ambler train station so he could catch a train to Philly and then one back to New York. It was a great visit and I plan to see him soon in New York City.
(Craig, I fully understand family commitments. Hopefully we can get togather for that pint real soon, maybe at Spring House Tavern).

I look forward to hooking-up with my old friends Eric and Bill and making two new Franconia College friends (Craige & Howie).

- Hoping to connect with old friends -- Robert Croston (New email address), 15:10:16 01/26/14 Sun (71.230.22.72)
Happy New Year to All,
I have not been on the Franconia College Forum for years. When I went on-line a couple of weeks ago, I noticed that I had not changed my email address. I submitted my new email address, but I noticed that it has not been updated on the Herald.
It is: (crostondesign@comcast.net).
I graduated from Franconia College in the spring of 1973. Some of you may remember the laminated rocking chair that designed and built for my senior project.
In 1981, I graduated with an MS in Design from the University of Massachusetts (Amhurst). In industry I was known for my designs of mobile robots, (6 years). Later, I join the ranks of university professors, (14 years).
I am now retired, (12 years this May). I spend my time sculpting the female figure (half scale), rebuilding my Lotus Super Seven (full scale) and model building (a 1-1/2" scale live steam 4-4-0 locomotive and an "O" scale model railroad).
I look forward to hearing from any of my old friends and professors. I now live just north of Philadelphia and if you wish you can call me at (215) 300-5866.
Robert

Ubundu Party ! Money IS evil.
780,000 acres burned in Idaho last year, I really wanted the local engineering school to reconstruct a giant Japanese dirigible (300,000 ton cap.!) for use as firefighting apparatus but first I'd have to deconstruct the lie that US won the War with Japan 1945 ! ( dig history archivist Doug Duane Dietrich on web) It looks like it's the end of the USA and, that maybe a good thing ! but I hope the economy doesn't implode all at once and suck the world down with it.
F.C.'s ol, Logic Prof. Corsi says an Obama false flag of desperation soon inevitable, and, I have never known him to be wrong.
In case you missed it, we have attacked Syria with bio-weapons (not to mention those being burnt alive NOW, not "never again ") in the form of WHO tainted polio vaccine, but, it's democratic ! It was the original vector that made the big C pandemic in the general population in the 1st place. Saulk, knew he had military monkey kidneys (from bio war labs)
There were over 250 known Cancer Casual viruses as early as 1922.
J. Kerry and most of the Israeli press seem to mention April as " do by " date. I hope for the arrest of the Pope !
I want Peace on Earth ! ("POE "name of one Free Energy Generator)
Keshe Foundation has an agreement, international, for that January 21st, Edison said most folks would rather die than think. Who, violates comfort zones ?
A-mused ? Literally w/o thought ?
A bit long, but, if anyone wants a simple science lecture...or, a flying car.
