Subject: Memories from '48, '49

This website is a real shocker. Can't believe this. I remember Canarsie with reeds, quicksand, the dump about a mile away where we gathered metal watch bands, tree huts. How about Mrs. McDermott at PS 242 and the Sisters at Holy Family and don't forget Father ? who always wanted more from that cruet with the wine. Flatlands Avenue

Hope all of you are doing well for yourselves and have great families: James Noble, Joyce Evans, Alan Birnbaum, Timothy Collins, Steve and Mike Calavetta and all the rest. James, remember, we first watched TV at your house.

Say hello if any of you see this. - Best wishes.

Hey Damacio: Remember me? I think you lived on Rockaway Parkway. I went to PS 242, then to Brooklyn Tech and CCNY. I married a girl from PS 242 - Irena Bulis who was one grade behind us. Still married and in love. We moved to Rochester NY in '64. Hope all is well with you. Irena and I still miss the weeds, dumps, Jamacia Bay and all the things that Canarsie used to be. Regards to you. Tom Mahalek >This website is a real shocker. Can't believe this.

I was in Canarsie those years and more. Went to 115 and lived on Canarsie Road Near Ave N. Went to Tilden Grad in 58. I remember the dump and the metal watch bands, the tree houses, The Gangling Brothers Circus at Ave M & 89th street right next to a big swamp, they had ponies, peacocks and other animals. Used ti ice skate on the swamp...someone did fall in and lose their life there in the early 40"s. Canarsie Pier was great fishing. Caught a lot of silver snapper there as a kid. My Great Grandparents were fishermen and clammers in Canarsie in the Jamaica Bay for many years. They lived right near the cemetary on 87th or 88th street. Canarsie was a great place. Still is, but not the same. Recently visited this year, and many of my old neighbors still live in the same houses. unbelieveable. Loved it and have many great memories of Canarsie in the old days.

Wow! I found this purely by accident. I remember Timothy Collins and Joyce Evans. James Noble and the Calavetta's sound familiar. I remember Florence Noble. But I remember Irena Bulis as if it were yesterday. She came to P.S.242 after the war and danced for our class and, if memory serves, came from Germany. I was impressed with her ability to perform in front of the whole class without embarressment, solid in her confidence. She held herself with a dignity not present in any of the girls I knew. I'm glad she found happiness.

I assume that I'm the Alan Birnbaum referred to in the brief above. I was graduated from 242 in June 1953, spent 2 years at Thomas Jefferson and finished high school at Hempstead, graduating in 1957. Went to Brooklyn Poly for 4 years, never persuing my dual majors of electrical engineering and math. Having spent the college summers working in the electrical field, I decided to persue a career in electrical contracting. I got my masters licence and, in 1977, opened a business. I still work at it and passed the presidency to my eldest son, Kenneth in 1991. Been married twice with sons Kenneth and Dennis from the first and Judd, Laura, and Benjamin from the second. My present wife and I have been married 34 years. Both were of German heritage. Did my admiration for Irena Bulis have anything to do with my selections?

Remembrances: Spanish tiled roof houses on Foster Ave and 104th st. ; the sandlot ballfield across the street; all the farms with their delicious tomatoes and my saltshaker; stickball against the factories on Foster; the Parkway Boys; Fred Miller, Henny Haber, Nina Vassalaro(sp); the Impolazzari's-Sal, Paul, etc; Charlie Sapienza, Manny Anahory, Anna LoPresti, Helen Chin.

Wow!!

Hi Alan. Irena and I saw your post and wanted to say hello. Irena does remember you too! We both often talk about growing up, all our classmates from PS 242, and the old days in Canarsie. We were married in Holy Family Church (it’s still there) and Irena is still as graceful and beautiful as ever. I retired after 37 year with Xerox as a Chemical Engineering Manager and traveled all over the world for the company while Irena pursued her interest in Dance, Art and languages after Brooklyn College.
We have two children, Regina and Tom Jr. and we plan to move from Rochester NY to North Carolina to be closer to our children. We hope you and your family are well.
Regards, Tom & Irena Mahalek
