On Saturday April 2, 2005 I drove 360 miles/579.24 kilometers to Santa Monica, CA for the screening of DUGA MRACNA NOC (2004) at the "Cinema Croatia" film festival being held at the Aero Theatre. I met, as pre-arranged, with another Goran Visnjic internet fan. After dinner we went on to the theater and noticed that its lobby walls were covered with signs saying, "NO AUTOGRAPHS." We arrived an hour early but were allowed to sit-in on the end of a panel discussion about Croatian films. One of the panelists was Mr. Branko Lustig (producer of SCHINDLER'S LIST); the other was actor Sergio Mimica-Gezzan. When this event ended, we moved forward and sat in the third row back from the stage in the dimly lit theater so that we could take a few photos of Goran Visnjic. Goran Visnjic came to the front of the screening room and introduced movie by way of answering a series of questions put to him by the lady that introduced him. Mr. Visnjic. explained that the movie consists of scenes taken directly from the Croatian TV series of the same name. That series however, did not begin to air on TV until earlier this year (2005). He further explained that the 5 1/2-hour long, original director's cut, was edited down to the award-winning 3-hour theatrical release. Then Mr. Visnjic answered a few questions from the audience. In answer to the first couple of questions (mine) Mr. Visnjic confirmed that the Region-2, P.A.L. format DVD, is now available in Europe, and has English subtitles. In answer to the next question, he said that it is still uncertain whether there will be issued a North America-friendly (Region-1, N.T.S.C. format) DVD. However, he did add that DUGA MRACNA NOC might, he said MIGHT, come out as a mini-series on US television, but nothing was definite at this time. One person asked if the film had been nominated for an Oscar as best foreign film. Both the lady introducer and Mr. Visnjic clarified DUGA MRACNA NOC was Croatia's official submission to the American Academy Awards, best foreign film committee, but that it had not been nominated by the Academy. When questioned about the Croatian men's clothing worn during the tavern scene (blue, short-waisted jackets with red and white embroidered cuffs), Mr. Visnjic replied that they were made of wool from Slavonia, the region in which the movie takes place. Then the introducer thanked Mr. Visnjic for coming and explained that Mr. Visnjic had to leave for another appointment. As Mr. Visnjic came down the aisle I leaned out with my program and pen, and asked for his autograph. Goran Visnjic, with a look of genuine pained regret, leaned down and gave three gentle tugs in quick succession to my sleeve (at the elbow), and looked straight into my eyes while saying softly, "Sorry, I can't." And then, he was past me, striding rapidly up the aisle. [ Next Thread | Previous Thread | Next Message | Previous Message ] |
