Life Through a Lens

Ever since his "discovery" of photography, Goran Visnjic, the most successful Croatian actor in Hollywood, started devoting the little spare time he has to this new hobby. The challenges for him are people, especially their portraits. He finds black and white and color photography equally appealing. His first photos are about to be
published by "Jane," an American magazine working on a special edition about celebrities and their hobbies, so that Visnjic agreed to let the public see how handy he is with his Leica.

"Some will contribute by their poems, others by drawings, and I am going to give my photos. We have agreed that I will take photos of Mekhi Phifer, a new 'ER' character," said Visnjic, who uses 35 mm film only.

His interest in photography developed while he was working on a documentary on Robert Capa, the famous war photographer, a Hungarian Jew who fled from Budapest to Berlin before the beginning of World War II, left Berlin for Paris, and eventually ended up in the US. During his
refugee days he discovered his talent and took pictures on the Spanish Civil War fronts. After that, he was witness to almost every war that took place in the mid twentieth century.

"American producers were looking for an actor with an accent to be Capa's 'voice,' and read the sentences from his diary and letters, and we decided that it was a good job for me. I enjoyed studying the biography of such an interesting person. Besides, Capa was the only photographer present at the legendary Omaha Beach on D-Day. Since his
voice had not been recorded, my interpretation was relatively free. I did it for pure enjoyment," said Goran. Connoisseurs claim there is even a physical resemblance between the two.

[Interviewer:] "And what about fast driving? Isn't that your passion, as well? You have recently become the owner of a Bond-style car. You once said that going fast was better for you than anything but sex."

[Visnjic:] "I have made all kinds of statements in my life, but I never said something as stupid as that. A Croatian weekly took it from some American magazine ["Glamour"]. The person I was interviewed by was obviously not paying attention to what I was saying, but decided to make
up something catchy that had nothing to do with my actual statements. That way, they made me look like some hick who only cares about sex and fast driving. Besides, if I were that crazy about fast driving, I would be a Formula driver, not an actor. I once participated in the Toyota
Celebrity Race to help raise money for a children's hospital. As far as the Aston Martin is concerned, I bought it two years ago. Journalists from a Croatian magazine have only recently found out about it because I do not have the need to talk to the press about such things."

The world premiere of "Hypnotic," by British director Nick Willing, is soon to take place. The lead in this movie, as well as in "Duga mracnaoc" ("The Long, Dark Night") by his father-in-law [Antun Vrdoljak], is played by Goran. When asked about the second movie's premiere, he charmingly answered: "You will have to ask Tonci [Vrdoljak's nickname]
about that. I can't wait to see it myself."

Since auditioning for movies to be filmed this summer is about to start, the actor is not certain if he and his wife would be able to spend their summer vacation in Croatia.
