“A spoonful of sugar makes the medicine go down ...” - but how do you sing that in Dutch? Not to worry, you’ll soon be singing to the lovely tune of our fabulous Opening Film and Julia Andrews will just be that woman who took off her bra in SOB! Our festival curtain-raiser is based on a wildly popular musical sitcom of the late ’60s. Tragically, the master tapes were wiped for reuse and the show was never seen again, but the memory refused to die. Fans unearthed the original scripts, and YES NURSE! NO NURSE! returns for a new generation. At an Amsterdam rest home live a group of eccentrics, under the care of Nurse Klivia. Life is a jolly musical, but their killjoy neighbour wants them evicted, and tries every means to do so. Over-the-top ’60s sets, tinted-postcard tableaux and lush, split-screen visuals ensure the film’s musical numbers truly give new meaning to the word “camp”.

The duo has now adapted their story for the big screen, starring that really annoying kid from HOME ALONE, Macaulay Culkin. Here he is, all grown up, drugged up, and dragged up, looking way sexier, whackier and naughtier. Playing opposite him is Seth Green, sometime Buffy werewolf. Boys Life is becoming something of a gay visual institution. This is the fourth collection of shorts in a series that has been chronicling the ups and downs of American gay life since 1993. L.T.R. - A reality TV-style mockumentary concerning the burgeoning “Long Term Relationship” between two young men in a world fraught with temptation and short tempers. O BEAUTIFUL - Being gay bashed and left in a cornfield in rural America takes an unusual turn when one of the bashers returns with remorse … and a secret. BUMPING HEADS - After a night of clubbing gone wrong, Gary and Craig spend the balance of their Saturday night in the Emergency Room tending to wounds both physical and emotional. THIS CAR UP - Opposites attract as a balding lawyer encounters a tough-looking bicycle messenger. In split-screen format, the film follows the two men in their separate worlds as they go through their daily routines.

This is what our two Belfast lads do, until one of them shags a client to death. Forced to look for “a new job”, the duo drifts through London’s gay underworld, and encounter The Desperate Dwarf, Dick “Cheese” Deepak and the Three West African Brothers, and (perhaps) they’ll learn the truth about “The Real Hard Red Bull Test” and “The Bread in the Bed”. Hailed as “wild, raunchy, clever, confrontational, super-energetic and consistently surprising,” this film may be politically incorrect, but it is in such bad taste that it ends up being good.

Punk-girl hoods Mao and Lenin are more than a little bored when they spot frumpy, lingerie saleswoman Marcia on the streets of Buenos Aires. She’s provincial and altogether unlike their super-cool friends, but Mao decides the challenge of trying to sleep with the straight girl is too much to resist. After a quasi-kidnapping, the dyke duo take Marcia on a road trip and their relationships shift as they call in on Lenin’s aged aunt. No doubt about it, bad girls rule; but it’s the vulnerability and tenderness just below the surfaces that touches us. This is a film that makes you sad when it ends and the black-and-white cinematography adds to its charm. This one will steal your heart!

Don't forget to bring a box of tissues for this one, though how its up to the viewer how to use them for this tender love story reminiscent of the seductive world of Lan Yu. Yossi and Jagger are two Israeli Army officers stationed on the snowy norther border with Lebanon. Although Israel has allowed gays to serve equally in the military since 1985, homophobia is still present both in the institution and in people’s minds. Despite their blossoming love for each other, the relationship has to be kept behind the closet door. Presented from the perspective of Yossi and Jagger, who struggle with their desire, the film also reveals aspects of Israeli society perhaps unknown to the foreigner, against a backdrop of endearing characters. In turn sweet and sad, renowned gay director Eytan Fox, whose short film GOTTA HAVE HEART was seen in our festival last year, gives a touching portrayal of gay life in the Israeli Army. This is a love story of fairy-tale quality. Perfect for dating!

How will you help your dying friend end his life? Charlie and Anna made a pact with the terminally ill Gavin to help him die when the time comes. A morphine overdose doesn’t work, so they use a plastic bag. Gavin’s wish is granted, but his ugly death launches an emotional roller-coaster for those who live on. Symptoms manifest by degrees - some raid the fridge, bicker over possessions and bitch about friends. For others, relationships begin and end, and life-long friendships are destroyed. Intensely hypnotic and surprisingly funny, this is a compassionate and optimistic film about the way grief can bring out the best and worst in all of us. It has won numerous awards, including the Teddy for Best Gay Feature at the Berlin Film Festival, and took the Australian Film Institute Awards by storm.

Take a look at the everyday life in Beijing: Xiao Bo lives with Nana, but Nana feels unsatisfied. She flirts with lots of men, hoping to find someone better, but starts to fear that there isn’t a man in Beijing who’s good enough for her. Dongdong, a high school boy whose mother is 100% one of a kind - she was first his mother and she became the father as well after going through a sex change. This complicates her relationship with Dongdong’s stepfather, who still loves her/im enough to preclude looking for a new girlfriend …the film’s rough indie edges intensify its splendidly perverse approach to gender politics. Based on an actual summer camp for young actors, CAMP tells the story of a group of extraordinary kids growing up and discovering who they are. 1/ : The Never Bending Story - Rhetoric, Body and Desire of Gay Imageries in Hong Kong Movies
When you are attracted to the gorgeous actress Brigitte Lin (Lin Qingxia) who plays Asia the Invincible in Swordsman II, have you ever thought that it is actually a love story between two men? In Jiang Hu: The Triad Zone, when the bodyguard Cheung Yiu-Yeung tells his secret love to his ‘big brother’ (Tony Leung Ka-Fai), would you burst into laughter or be stunned by the “love that dares not speak its name”? Or you might find Eason Chan in Lavender more “gay” than Hu Jun in Lan Yu, as the former is a campy sissy man while the latter simply acts like a “straight” man?!
This seminar examines the changing gay images in Hong Kong movies and discusses how a queer space for gay men’s viewing pleasure is created. A Hong Kong version of Vito Russo’s ‘Celluloid Closet’ plus Stanley Kwan’s ‘Yang b Yin’, but more bold, more camp and ready to shout!
