- Waste Land/Hill crest view Cwmtillery. -- Jo Tucker, Wed, May 16 2007, 12:09:57
I was just wondering does anyone know what the plan for the land where the upside down houses used to be?
I have asked the council once again and all they say, there might be private developers using the land. I have lived in hill crest view all my life and would like to see either a park for the children or maybe a community hall put there. This i have talked about to the council, all they say is that they havent got the money to spend for something like that. I just dont know what to think anymore about the council and what might happen to hill crest view. It seems to be going to the dogs in cwmtillery. Does anyone feel the same?

Hi, firstly what a useful website, thanks! We currently live in Newport and we are house hunting from Abertillery along the Heads of the Valleys road as far as Tredegar. We're looking for fresh air, countryside and a more community feel than where we currently are (generally a better lifestyle). Is Cwmtillery a friendly place for newcomers? Is there any advice anyone can offer us? Thanks in advance and we may be neighbours soon!

73 new houses -- Jason Gray (uhh ohh), Mon, Jun 09 2008, 15:26:46
hello everyone. I have recently been told about the plan to build 73 new house on the mountain side behind Hill Crest View and Valley View (where i live). I knew that this was looked into in the early 90'sbut was told the plans were rejected (?). I am only 20 years old but i grew up playing on the mountain with friends and walking with my family and i feel it would look just as bad if not worse than the wind turbines that were considered last year. The amazing views would be destroyed along with the small community character that Cwmtillery has. Also, essecially during heavy rain the water that runs down the mountain behind my house is quite unnerving so surely the houses planned will suffer from it even worse? If anyone knows more about this or is planning to fight against this please email me.
thank you
Jason

- Glynmaws Street? -- Phil Brooks, Thu, Apr 12 2007, 23:42:21
My Ancester, Ernest Solomon Brooks, left Bath, Somerset between 1901 and 1911 and married in St Michaels Church, Abertillery on the 4 August 1912. He worked locally (as a Stitcher?) until he returned to Bath in 1929. I assume a stitcher was a reserved mining occupation as he did not serve in WW1 and had children locally in 1914, 1917. However his address at the time of his marriage appears to be 53 Glynmaws Street, Abertillery. Does anyone know if "Glynmaws" Street is right as I cant find any trace using Streetmap/Google etc - Any help would be very much appreciated.

- James Snook,sons Charles and Walter -- Joan Snook/ Elderton, Thu, Mar 13 2008, 16:37:46
Are there any members of a Snook family left in Cwmtillery
The family as I know consisted of James born 1868 in Midsomer Norton Somersetwho was a Miner. He moved to Cwmtillery in 1910 (I'm guessing the date). The only bit of address I have is Zion House, East Side, Cwymtillery.
He had 2 sons Charles and Walter plus other children. That is all I know apart from the fact that there was a descendant of his who lived in Cwmtillery in 1962.
James would be my great uncle.
I have always wondered about mining in Wales as I was born in a Mining area in Yorkshire.
If there are no members of this family living in Cwmtillery I'm hopng someone will know something of them.
I have enjoyed reading the e-mails on this site and found it refreshing to know that there are helpful people willing to share what they know.
I'm also looking forward to a visit to the Valley in April.
In hope - Joan

- No one has to suffer chronic back pain (cardiff drs will sort it) -- sue laidlaw, Sun, Feb 17 2008, 21:27:29
Minimally Invasive Microsurgery Available
Minimally Invasive Microsurgery for the Spine
Neck pain and back pain are the main causes of absence from work. It is also the main presenting complaint of almost 60% of patients in any busy neurosurgical practice. Conventional treatment of slipped discs involves rest, physiotherapy and analgesics for an adequate period of time. However, in instances of failure of conservative treatment, progressive neurological deficit and intractable pain, surgery is required.
Conventional spine surgery involves making long incisions, forceful muscle retraction for prolonged time and removal of normal tissues like ligaments and bone to approach the area of pathology. Often, these surgeries are done under prolonged general anesthesia.
Minimal Invasive Spine Surgery involves
• use of very small incisions
• minimal muscle retraction
• less normal tissue damage
• targeted treatment of pathology.
The advantages include:-
• less blood loss
o minimal pain and morbidity
o many surgeries done under short duration anesthesia, and hence may be possible even in patients with high risk of anesthesia.
o patient mobilized very early
o early return to work
o prevents complications associated with prolonged bed rest.
These techniques are equally applicable in the cervical and lumbar spine.
The consultants offering this procedure at Spire Cardiff Hospital are:
Mr Richard Hadfield, Consultant Neurosurgeon aBSc, MB BS, FRCS
Mr Ravindra Nannapenini, Consultant Neurosurgeon MS DNB FRCS (Ed) FRCSGl (surgical neurology)

- Cwmtillery -- Derek & Hilary Overfield, Fri, Jul 20 2001, 22:08:51
Calling all Cwmtillerians - especially 1944-1958. I was brought up in the village (before moving to Six Bells and then Abertillery and than marriage (1970) to Hilary Briscoe(Royal Lane). Hilary and I have many memories of Cwmtillery and of the people who lived there. Gwynn's Shop, Red Brick Chapel (and West Bank)the PO and the Padfields, St Pauls and Bill Thay .. Royston Sterry, Keith Sutclifffe, Alan Green .. Len Sargent, who taught piano (his father was winder at the colliery). People who were in the First Aid Room at the collery - Bill Redfern, Harry Wiltshire ... memories come flooding back. We would be delighted to make contact with anyone who remembers either/both of us.
Derek & Hilary Overfield

Am trying to trace two sets of the Daniel family, namely Henry and Martha and John and Anne Daniel who lived in Cwmtillery in the late 19th. The Daniel family originally lived in Blaenavon. Also that of Maggie and Jame Stokes and their daughter Rosie. Any help would be much appreciated.

Abertillery Technical School 1946-49 -- Donald Smith (Curious), Fri, Oct 12 2007, 17:29:16
After several appeals it seem nobody of my school time are around or available to recall past times or progress through the years.Winter 1947 we played our version of Ice hockey in High Street Six Bells in front of Mrs George Daggers house.1949 Abertillery RFC started a colts team.Anurin(Tye)Lewis played before "GOING NORTH" later. John Lentil(Onion) broke his right arm, became ambidextrous at table tennis and batting at cricket on Warm Turn Tip,causing argument when changing from right to left hand to hook over the short boundary. I have a class photo to anyone interested

He lodged with the Lewis family of Blaenau Gwent Rows before he married my grandma, Margaret Jukes in 1934.I am trying to trace his early life.

Bert Jones known locally was 'Cocker' -- Marie, Mon, Sep 10 2007, 8:29:44
Im just wondering if any body still living in Cwmtillery &
Abertillery knew my grandfather Bert Jones his name known locally was 'Cocker' he worked at Cwmtillery pit all of his life apart from the war period.
He married Getrude May Jones. They were the last people
to leave the old west bank. I am trying to form an extensive family tree and have done well with
regards to my Nan (Gertrude) but Bert has been a problem...his mother was Sarah not sure of his father's name but I do know he had brothers who were Jack, Joe, Ivor (who immirgrated to New Zealand) and Ron, Im not sure if they had any sisters but the 'boys' were well known especially in the 'Glasgow' etc...Bert was also in the Army and was in the Abertillery Harriers, he loved a game of Skittles too.
I would love to hear about Bert's family especially his mum & dad and also his mother's maiden name.....look forward any info you have
