- Bill, David is right it was early 70s that all ponies except 3 came out of the colliery for the last time. A few ended up at local farms but most went to Abergavenny market to be sold. I would like to think they all ended up on farms also, but I don't know. The 3 ponies which remained, transferred to the Rose and were used underground to salvage any equipment needed from Cwmtillery. When the Rose closed these 3 went to the local farm on the old blaina road (NT) -- Les, Sun, Jan 27 2002, 9:36:32

Family research -- Robert Anderson, Sun, Sep 04 2011, 14:08:49
Hi, I'm looking for some help tracing my grandma who lived in Cwmtillery in the 40's.
We know her name was Elizabeth Linda Patrica Smith (not sure about the order of her names) and that she lived in Cwmtillery on Westbank, either 34 or 43.
My father was born on 7th of March 1949 and my Nan (his adoptive mother) was asked by his maternal mother to keep the name "John", which she did. He was adopted by a family in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire.
We would like to find his mother / our Grandma and let her know he is o.k.
Any help would be greatly appreciated as church adoptions at this time held very little info and we know next to nothing.

- Pubs -- Les, Fri, Apr 20 2001, 12:21:17
Near the old railway line a little way up from the Mount
was the Pub" The Britannia", I have been told it was known as "The Old Maids" because it was run by sisters, but how many sisters two or three?
Also it was well known for the staff of the steam loco to purchase a jug of ale on the way up the valley and hand in the empty on the way back.
Anyone have any stories or comment....

Chivers Family -- Nick Legard, Thu, Mar 05 2009, 18:12:23
I am researching my wife's family and have found that her great great grandfather was a Job Chivers son of Joseph Chivers who started the Brewery in Cwmtillery centred on the Tillery Fountain. Job died young(38) in 1898 and I know little of what happened to the family after that, particularly his widow Rachel and their younger children.
If there are any relatives still living in the area I would be delighted to hear from you as we are planning to visit the area in May

I have a photograph of them outside a house called Ty Dany Coed, the one he was said to have built.Does anyone recognise the name of the house? or know anything about Albert or Martha? There is no street name unfortunately for the property.
I would be grateful for any information, thank you,

- EVANS FAMILY - BLAINA -- Ann Roberts, Mon, Sep 07 2009, 13:41:34
Now that I have exhausted tracing my paternal grandfather's side of the family, I thought that I would make a start on the grandmother's side.
Margaret Evans (married to William Jelly) was the daughter of Thomas and Dinah Evans (nee Davies). Thomas was from Blaina and Dinah from Rhymney. Thomas and Dinah married in 1865 - he died in 1889, she died in 1915. They had five daughters - Mary Ann; Margaret (my grandmother; Martha; Rachel; Elizabeth plus one son - John.
Mary Ann married John Reed in 1890 and they had five daughters - Elsie; Maggie; Rachel; Gladys and May.
Are there any descendants out there from this part of the family.

Shops-boots-shoes and payday -- Les, Sat, Jan 12 2002, 10:32:20
Hi Everyone,
Well the start of another year, hope it turns out kind to all of you and thanks for all your support last year.
I'm trying to add some past history and hope your input will shine some light on the matter.
I have read in books about the Relief man? Was this a person arranging some kind of loan for the people until payday And was the fund held by the council Can anyone expand on this as I would like to include it to the site.
Also the Boot fund, did children have to ask their headmaster before being issued with new one?
Where did the boots/shoes come from, that is who funded it and can anyone expand on how the system worked
Look forward to any input, message board or emails I'll leave it up to you
Did the Co op shop in cwmtillery fit into this anywhere
Happy surfing
Les

- Tracing Relatives -- Douglas Greenow, Tue, Oct 05 2004, 21:48:23
Hello everyone,
I am trying to build on my family tree and in particular parts of my family who were largely based in the Abertillery area. I am Douglas Greenow who was born in Abertillery on 12 Dec 44. We lived in Duke Street (No 8?) until 1946 when my family moved to Brighton. My father Windsor, and his brothers and sisters all lived in Abertillery. They were Violet Ivy, who emigrated to Canada; Leonard Boyce who married Dorothy Gilmore, who I understand is still living in the Glynneath area; Lesley Roy who also moved to Brighton and his wife who is still living in Brighton; Olive Myrtle who married Bill Duggan; and Clifford George who I believe worked all of his life in the Six Bells. He moved to Kent to be with his half sister Maureen and her husband Ernie, who looked after him until his death from the miner’s disease. There were also two half brothers Peter and Colin and they married and moved to the Nottingham area (I think).
All these children were the product of my Grandfather Tom Greenow (1972-1940) and his wives Janet Agnes Meredith (Jennet?)(1874-1919) and Louisa Watkins (nee Jones)(1890-1939).
If anybody has any information, anecdotal or otherwise on my aunts, uncles and grandparents this would be greatly appreciated.

Old Coal Mining Level -- Dave Thomas, Tue, Dec 18 2001, 17:36:13
As a follow up to the previous debate on the whereabouts and name of the old level on the Old Blaina Road, I was talking with a long time Cwmtillery resident by the name of Allan Preece about the subject. Allan tells me that he helped his father Frank Preece, bring the last pony from Rhiw Colburn or Colbine as Allan called it, sometime during the late 40s. His dad, Frank was the Gaffer Haulier at Cwmtillery for many years. This was evidently, one of many old levels that were mined around the mountainsides in those days.

Hello!
I was looking at the history pages - the war period - in order to find some info re my mother's evacuation to Cumtillery in 1939. I was absolutely amazed to find, in the very last paragraph, a reference to a " dirty, tired, frightened little girl....her name was Ruth..."
So was my mother's name!
There is also a reference to the "West Bank" which my mum definitely recalls. However the name Maureen Moss doesn't ring a bell for my mother who is now 82.
Can anyone help in finding the family that adopted my mum? Or can anyone pass this message on to someone who can?
Many thanks, Jonathan Lesser

- Wheely bins -- Jon (Concerned), Thu, Aug 27 2009, 22:50:11
I'm very concerned about the proposed introduction of wheely bins throughout Abertillery. Firstly, the pavements in the majority of the town are quite narrow. This would mean that mums with pushchairs would put their lives and the lives of their children in danger as the wheely bins, being of considerable size, would almost completely obstruct the pavement, causing them to have to walk for extended distances on the road. Although some speed calming measures have been put in place, there are more roads that don't have these than do have them. For myself, I would face the same dangers as the mums with pushchairs, as my guide dog would have to lead me in the road for extended distances.
has the Council really thought this wheely bin idea through? the number of properties in Abertillery where wheely bins can be stored is exceedingly low. A very high number of houses have steps, and those that are on pavement level don't necessarily have anywhere to keep the wheely bins.
So, is Abertillery going to turn in to a wheely bin park? Is the next step going to be banning all traffic from the roads so that we have somewhere safe to walk?

- Red Ash Level -- Boyo, Thu, May 03 2001, 17:56:58
Does anyone remember the old level when it was working? I remember the journeys going up and down the incline and the men running down the hill with their ponies at the end of the shift. I don't know if the level was still operating then or if they were salvaging equipment. This would have been late 40s early 50s. That's dating myself isn't it now!
The men would hold each others ponies while they lined up at the office for their pay packet. We were only toddlers at the time but we got a kick our of being close to the ponies.
Also, does anyone remember the tunnel that run underneath the old green? It carried pipes from the lakes to the colliery. It started at the overflow at the bottom end of the lake and run to the old concrete settling ponds that were at the lower end of the green next to the haulage house for the level. Adventurous boys would sometimes travel this tunnel with the aid of a candles. Of course we would never have done that!!!

- WHITE & YORK FAMILIES -- WHITE & YORK, Wed, Jan 06 2010, 12:47:31
Hi, trying to find descendents of the WHITE family who moved to Abertillery Wales around about 1908 from Bath Somerset or, and Bristol Avon. My great grandparents were called Edwin Edward and Susan Annie White. I know one son Arthur Herbert and his wife Winifred White, lived with the Thomas family in Spring Cottages in 1911 with there son Francis aged 1 year, also Mabel Alice White (my Nan) lived in Pennybont Rd before she married in st Michael’s church Abertillery in 1914 and another brother, Sidney Clifford White who may of lived in Eastville Rd Six Bells around 1915. My great grandparents had five other daughters and a son that I have hit a brick wall with; they are Edwin George, Amy, Florence, Evelyn, Susanne and Marjory.
Also looking for descendents of the YORK family who lived in Abertillery, my grandfather Benjamin George York married Mabel Alice White, they moved to London in the 1930’s
His parents lived in Norman Street from around 1900 they were Benjamin & Rosanna York along with Thomas, William,(Benjamin) Harriet, Mary, James, Albert, Charles, Frederick, daughter in law Florence and Grandson Thomas a year and a half old.
I would love to hear from anyone who knows about them or even a descendent would be great
Thank You
Rob

- hi everyone -- cerys, Tue, Oct 27 2009, 12:07:15
Hi, I've been looking at the fantastic photos you have on here and I was wondering if anyone has any photos of the miners at cwmtillery colliery in the 1960's?? My grandfather worked there but was killed at the mine in 1967 I believe following an accident. Obviously I never got to meet him as he died before I was born but it would be great to see a photo of the miners and possibly he might be in the picture? His name was Bryn Evans and he lived in Cwmtillery.
Thank you

Blaina -- Trish, Sun, Sep 27 2009, 15:32:41
I am trying to find information on my Grandfather who was Thomas John Roberts born 1880 Blaina. I have been trying to find his army no, which I understand you can get from the absent voters list 1914-1916. I am told he fought in WW1 and was reported missing assumed dead. But he returned to his family but not before his wife had given birth to Horace and Horace was given away to Thomas' wife dearest friend Cissie Vaughan nee Vine. I would love to hear from Horace's family (as I understand he married) Horace was born Mar q 1916. Regards Trish

- Lavender Family -- Claire Franklin, Thu, Sep 03 2009, 1:18:40
My Nan was Elsie Lavender and she lived in Glendwr Street. Elsie was born in 1921 to parents Ethel and Bill (William) Lavender. She had an older sister called Connie who passed away at the age of 21 years. She had a younger brother Hayden and a younger sister Maureen (Mary) and Sheila Lavender. Elsie lived in Abertillery from about 1921-c1940s and she then moved to Coventry. Elsie had a cousin Beryl, and a cousin called Sybil. If anyone remembers the family I would really appreciate it if you could get in touch either on this website or by email. My address is cpepelepue@aol.com
We have always thought it rather sad that when my Nan's mother (Ethel) died, William and the children moved to Coventry to be with Elsie all the photos were left in Wales. It would be lovely to try and get some photos perhaps from their school especially of Connie whom we never met.
Many thanks Claire

He is back row furthest to the right, (but not the guy in the suite) so if there is anyone out there from this team, or if anyone has any contact details for any player, please email me. I am looking for Maureen Woodward. Maureen married Bryn Woodward from Gwern Berthi Road and worked at the offices of Emmanual Marks, Solicitor in Somerset Street. (She was at Dai Marks office with Mary Brown, Gillian Lewis and myself). They lived in Roseheyworth and I believe they had 2 children. They moved to Rhoose where Bryn had a job as a Game Keeper.
Before she was married I believe Maureen lived in Blaenau Gwent Rows and has one brother.
If anyone knows where Maureen is I would really like to reconnect with her.

- Boulton Family -- Dennis Corbett, Wed, Aug 19 2009, 11:08:46
I am doing family history research covering one of the Boulton family who moved from Pucklechurch, Gloucestershire, to Cwmtillery and appear in the 1871 census. Their address is given as S.W.C.C houses Cwmtillery West No 37. I presume SWCC is the South Wales Coal Company, but can anyone shed any more light on where the abode actually was in Cwmtillery. Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks
Dennis

Just reading online about Cwmtillery / Abertillery. Brought back happy memories. I lived on Tillery Road until I married and then moved (husband in the military) to Germany /Canada/ Southern England and emigrated back to Canada in 1980. Came back for a visit in 1988 and was back again last year - lots of changes!
Really enjoyed my visit and filled up on enough British food (fish and chips . beer etc) to last me until my next visit!!).
Wish you all well.

- Top Rows Cwmtillery. -- Jane Holloway, Tue, Nov 19 2002, 13:51:18
I am glad to be able to share my happy memories with other people that are linked in some way to cwmtillery.
My memories are from when i was very young where i lived in top rows on a mountainside that overlooked cwmtillery colliery, where my dad nipper perry was a miner and part time fireman.
I can remember my wellington boots that were a permanent fixture to my feet come rain or shine, and the tantrums i gave whenever someone took them off, but they were the good old days without a care in the world and a lot of mountainside to roam free.
What i would give to be able to relive those childhood memories that are very clear within my mind. The times i came of my three wheeler riding down the hills, or sometimes being pushed down by my older sister.
Top rows was a close knit community and everyone looked after one another, no door needed to be locked and children like myself were safe, we were like one big happy family.
Is there any one out there that once lived in top rows, if so please e-mail me or leave messages on the board as many people like myself would love to read them.
regards
jane holloway.
