- WHITE & YORK FAMILIES -- WHITE & YORK, Wed, Jan 06 2010, 12:47:31
Hi, trying to find descendents of the WHITE family who moved to Abertillery Wales around about 1908 from Bath Somerset or, and Bristol Avon. My great grandparents were called Edwin Edward and Susan Annie White. I know one son Arthur Herbert and his wife Winifred White, lived with the Thomas family in Spring Cottages in 1911 with there son Francis aged 1 year, also Mabel Alice White (my Nan) lived in Pennybont Rd before she married in st Michael’s church Abertillery in 1914 and another brother, Sidney Clifford White who may of lived in Eastville Rd Six Bells around 1915. My great grandparents had five other daughters and a son that I have hit a brick wall with; they are Edwin George, Amy, Florence, Evelyn, Susanne and Marjory.
Also looking for descendents of the YORK family who lived in Abertillery, my grandfather Benjamin George York married Mabel Alice White, they moved to London in the 1930’s
His parents lived in Norman Street from around 1900 they were Benjamin & Rosanna York along with Thomas, William,(Benjamin) Harriet, Mary, James, Albert, Charles, Frederick, daughter in law Florence and Grandson Thomas a year and a half old.
I would love to hear from anyone who knows about them or even a descendent would be great
Thank You
Rob

- hi everyone -- cerys, Tue, Oct 27 2009, 12:07:15
Hi, I've been looking at the fantastic photos you have on here and I was wondering if anyone has any photos of the miners at cwmtillery colliery in the 1960's?? My grandfather worked there but was killed at the mine in 1967 I believe following an accident. Obviously I never got to meet him as he died before I was born but it would be great to see a photo of the miners and possibly he might be in the picture? His name was Bryn Evans and he lived in Cwmtillery.
Thank you

I am trying to find information on my Grandfather who was Thomas John Roberts born 1880 Blaina. I have been trying to find his army no, which I understand you can get from the absent voters list 1914-1916. I am told he fought in WW1 and was reported missing assumed dead. But he returned to his family but not before his wife had given birth to Horace and Horace was given away to Thomas' wife dearest friend Cissie Vaughan nee Vine. I would love to hear from Horace's family (as I understand he married) Horace was born Mar q 1916. Regards Trish

- EVANS FAMILY - BLAINA -- Ann Roberts, Mon, Sep 07 2009, 13:41:34
Now that I have exhausted tracing my paternal grandfather's side of the family, I thought that I would make a start on the grandmother's side.
Margaret Evans (married to William Jelly) was the daughter of Thomas and Dinah Evans (nee Davies). Thomas was from Blaina and Dinah from Rhymney. Thomas and Dinah married in 1865 - he died in 1889, she died in 1915. They had five daughters - Mary Ann; Margaret (my grandmother; Martha; Rachel; Elizabeth plus one son - John.
Mary Ann married John Reed in 1890 and they had five daughters - Elsie; Maggie; Rachel; Gladys and May.
Are there any descendants out there from this part of the family.

- Lavender Family -- Claire Franklin, Thu, Sep 03 2009, 1:18:40
My Nan was Elsie Lavender and she lived in Glendwr Street. Elsie was born in 1921 to parents Ethel and Bill (William) Lavender. She had an older sister called Connie who passed away at the age of 21 years. She had a younger brother Hayden and a younger sister Maureen (Mary) and Sheila Lavender. Elsie lived in Abertillery from about 1921-c1940s and she then moved to Coventry. Elsie had a cousin Beryl, and a cousin called Sybil. If anyone remembers the family I would really appreciate it if you could get in touch either on this website or by email. My address is cpepelepue@aol.com
We have always thought it rather sad that when my Nan's mother (Ethel) died, William and the children moved to Coventry to be with Elsie all the photos were left in Wales. It would be lovely to try and get some photos perhaps from their school especially of Connie whom we never met.
Many thanks Claire

- Wheely bins -- Jon (Concerned), Thu, Aug 27 2009, 22:50:11
I'm very concerned about the proposed introduction of wheely bins throughout Abertillery. Firstly, the pavements in the majority of the town are quite narrow. This would mean that mums with pushchairs would put their lives and the lives of their children in danger as the wheely bins, being of considerable size, would almost completely obstruct the pavement, causing them to have to walk for extended distances on the road. Although some speed calming measures have been put in place, there are more roads that don't have these than do have them. For myself, I would face the same dangers as the mums with pushchairs, as my guide dog would have to lead me in the road for extended distances.
has the Council really thought this wheely bin idea through? the number of properties in Abertillery where wheely bins can be stored is exceedingly low. A very high number of houses have steps, and those that are on pavement level don't necessarily have anywhere to keep the wheely bins.
So, is Abertillery going to turn in to a wheely bin park? Is the next step going to be banning all traffic from the roads so that we have somewhere safe to walk?

Just reading online about Cwmtillery / Abertillery. Brought back happy memories. I lived on Tillery Road until I married and then moved (husband in the military) to Germany /Canada/ Southern England and emigrated back to Canada in 1980. Came back for a visit in 1988 and was back again last year - lots of changes!
Really enjoyed my visit and filled up on enough British food (fish and chips . beer etc) to last me until my next visit!!).
Wish you all well.

- Top Rows Cwmtillery. -- Jane Holloway, Tue, Nov 19 2002, 13:51:18
I am glad to be able to share my happy memories with other people that are linked in some way to cwmtillery.
My memories are from when i was very young where i lived in top rows on a mountainside that overlooked cwmtillery colliery, where my dad nipper perry was a miner and part time fireman.
I can remember my wellington boots that were a permanent fixture to my feet come rain or shine, and the tantrums i gave whenever someone took them off, but they were the good old days without a care in the world and a lot of mountainside to roam free.
What i would give to be able to relive those childhood memories that are very clear within my mind. The times i came of my three wheeler riding down the hills, or sometimes being pushed down by my older sister.
Top rows was a close knit community and everyone looked after one another, no door needed to be locked and children like myself were safe, we were like one big happy family.
Is there any one out there that once lived in top rows, if so please e-mail me or leave messages on the board as many people like myself would love to read them.
regards
jane holloway.

- 'The Other Side of the Underneath' (1972 film) -- Sean Kaye-Smith (Information), Mon, Jul 27 2009, 15:52:36
Are the residents of Cwmtillery aware that the feature film 'The Other Side of the Underneath', directed in 1972 by Jane Arden and filmed in and around Cwmtillery and Abertillery, was released on DVD and blue ray disc for the first time two weeks ago. Whilst the film is radical and with some very shocking imagery - and not family viewing - local people might be interested in the many shots of the colliery and the surrounding area.
The film was restored and released by the British Film Institute and shown at the National Film Theatre and The Cube in Bristol during the last two weeks.
Please contact me if you would like more information.

- Hale family -- Paddy Holroyde (Hopegul Holroyde), Thu, May 21 2009, 0:55:12
My married name is Paddy (Patricia) Holroyde, having married Husband Ray (Yorkshire man) 13 years ago, we now live in Hindhead, Surrey.
Between 1958 and 1979, I was married to Ivor Hale (born in Llanhilleth - now resident in Woking, Surrey).
I am trying to gain information on the family of Mr Ivor Hale, whom we believe lived and raised his family in Cwmtillery, This is for our family archive - and also for a 'this is your life' type of book, which I'm creating for my daughter Beverley's 50th Birthday, on 13th June '09.
Working backward, from present times, here is what we know.
Fact: Ivor William Hale (my former Husband & Beverley's Father) - born Llanhilleth 26th December 1936.
His Mother: Phyllis May Hale (nee Williams) native of Llanhilleth and daughter of Edith Williams.
His Father: Royal Marine Ivor Hale - born Cwmtillery (?) drowned at sea, went down on 'HMS Glorious' on 6th June 1940, off Narvik.
Fact: Royal Marine Ivor Hale, was the son of Mr Ivor Hale
Our understanding is that Ivor Hale (No 1) lived with his wife and (21?) children in Cwmtillery.
Royal Marine Ivor Hale (Ivor No 2) was a career sailor. He was posted to many Royal Marine barracks in the UK and was certainly in Malta & the Med: with HMS Glorious before WW II. He had 3 children - Marina Hale Born 1935 / Ivor Hale born 1937 / Doris Hale born 1938. His final posting was from RM Plymouth, and his name is on the Plymouth cenotaph.
In the summer of 1956 I first visited Llanhilleth with my fiance Ivor (No 3) and, during that visit, I wanted us to travel up the valley to Cwm, to call upon his Grandfather Ivor Hale (No 1), I believe my Mother In Law Phyllis kept in touch with someone from Cwmtillery, for she knew that her Father In Law Ivor (No 1) was still alive then, but of a great age. Sadly, Ivor (No 3) decided against a visit, and explained to me that, having lost his own Father (Ivor No 2) at the age of 4, there was little memory of his Dad and, being unsure of his own paternal roots, felt it unwise to impose upon a family who would have little recollection of him.
I do remember us going (toward Crumlin ?) to visit an elderly lady, who was an elder sister of Ivor Hale (No 2) and her name was 'Auntie Anne' - living with her own daughter, in what I can remember as a lovely old small farmhouse in countryside.
Ivor (No 3) is 72 years of age now, and his memory is getting sketchy. My former Mother In Law Phyllis (2nd marriage to Leslie Steadman) has long since passed on and much has been lost over time. If anyone has a connection with the Hale family of Cwmtillery, it will be good to hear from you. Thank you for listening to a disjointed family tale and for your time.
Yours sincerely
Paddy Holroyde (Mrs)
20/5/2009
Ps - you may be interested to hear that there is an Ivor Hale (No 4), for I was fortunate enough to have a Son, and carried on the family tradition. But Ivor (4) simply has two daughters, so perhaps the old name combination may be laid to rest here.

Eva was born 1899 and died 1984 and was the daughter of Hugh and Mary Davies - owners of the Ffosmaen Inn, Nantyglo.
By the time of the 1911 census the family had moved to Milfraen House, Nantyglo. She was the first wife of my father - William Jelly - and they were divorced in 1945. Eva returned to Nantyglo and died in Nevill Hall Hospital, Abergavenny after a fall.
I wonder if anyone can remember Eva. I would like to know what sort of lady she was and also - was she an invalid?

Coroner's Report/Name of Colliery -- Christine Baillie, Fri, May 08 2009, 7:41:52
I have a death certificate dated 23 August 1890 for my 2xgreat grandfather: Joseph Short aged 74 years of age stating Joseph died from injuries received from a coal fall 4 years previously at the what appears to be 'Joseph Miles/Males colliery, Cwmtillery'. An inquest was held on 1 September 1890 by the Deputy Coroner for Monmouthshire.
Can anyone help as to where I could possibly find a newspaper report on the inquest and also the name of the colliery? I have not heard of a Joseph Males colliery in Cwmtillery but perhaps it could be the name of the owner or manager perhaps?
Thank you. Christine Baillie

Chivers Family -- Nick Legard, Thu, Mar 05 2009, 18:12:23
I am researching my wife's family and have found that her great great grandfather was a Job Chivers son of Joseph Chivers who started the Brewery in Cwmtillery centred on the Tillery Fountain. Job died young(38) in 1898 and I know little of what happened to the family after that, particularly his widow Rachel and their younger children.
If there are any relatives still living in the area I would be delighted to hear from you as we are planning to visit the area in May

looking out the window this morning after heavy snow over night reminds me of the old winters we used to have walking to school when they never closed and our little bottles of milk thawing out by the coal fire in the class room good old days

Sarah was the daughter of the owners of the Ffosmaen Inn, Nantyglo, born 1899, died 1984. She was the first wife of my father - William Jelly - and they were divorced in 1945. Sarah returned to Nantyglo and died in Nevill Hall Hospital, Abergavenny after a fall.
I wonder if anyone can remember Sarah, I believe she was known as Eva. I would like to know what sort of lady she was and also - was she an invalid?
Thanks
Ann

I can´t remember their address, but they lived in Abertillery. Any info. would be much appreciated. With best regards, Richard Griffin.

- Evacuee -- Jonathan Lesser, Sun, Dec 14 2008, 18:55:33
Hello!
I was looking at the history pages - the war period - in order to find some info re my mother's evacuation to Cumtillery in 1939. I was absolutely amazed to find, in the very last paragraph, a reference to a " dirty, tired, frightened little girl....her name was Ruth..."
So was my mother's name!
There is also a reference to the "West Bank" which my mum definitely recalls. However the name Maureen Moss doesn't ring a bell for my mother who is now 82.
Can anyone help in finding the family that adopted my mum? Or can anyone pass this message on to someone who can?
Many thanks, Jonathan Lesser

ALF YOUNG -- Lesley Butcher, Thu, Oct 24 2002, 7:27:32
HI Everyone,
I read with interest the piece on the 'caracters' page about my Uncle, Alf Young. By the way he read meters for the Electricity Board not the Gas Board.
Some time ago I asked for help on these pages for help in finding some photos of my Dad Desmond Young when he was competeing in gymnastics competitions all those years ago. All his cups and trophys were kept at Bleantillery School and so were destroyed in the fire in the 60's.My family has no mementos of his time as a gymnast and I know that he was so proud of his achievements. Sadly Dad died 3 years ago and is greatly missed still. So, can anyone help??
Also, Les has kindly posted on the St Pauls page, a newspaper cutting of Cwmtillery Celtic. The picture was taken during the 30's and I'm almost convinced that the Gent third fron the right, back row is my Grandfather, Gwyn Young. Can anyone confirm this? I believe there may be some uncles there too, but I cannot identify them, can anyone out there??
I love this Cwmtillery Web-site, I moved to Somerset 21 years ago and it's just about my only contact with 'home'now. Many thanks to everyone who contributes, especially Les.
Kind regards Lesley Butcher
