I haven't lifted the Tacoma. In fact, it looks pretty much stock. If you look at the pics here (http://www.boomspeed.com/lcraymond/Mike1.htm), it looks very close to that right now.

I have modified the suspension for greater travel, but it's still stock height. I haven't wanted to put a lift and taller tires on because taller tires screw up the truck's ability to crawl very slowly unless you also dump a pile of dough into regearing.

Also, the front end isn't particularly strong, so it doesn't hold up to large tires that well. I did have a prototype Truetrac limited-slip in the front awhile back. It worked great (I loved it), but it kept spitting out the driver's side axle shaft, so I had the unit removed. My Taco was the only one with automatic axle disconnect to ever have a Truetrac in the front. As far as I know, Eaton shelved the project after I sent the unit back to them.

About four years ago, I had a locker installed in the rear differential. It makes all the difference off-road.

Sounds like you have a sane approach with modifying your STi. Still, I wonder if you'll get the bug a bit early.
