It's being marketed as a cross-over, not quite station wagon, not quite SUV. However, it is built entirely on a car platform and is technically classed as a mid-size hatch back.

It does have a higher profile. It's built on the Neon platform but the ground clearance was raised (it's 1" shorter than a stock Jeep Liberty) and the seats were raised 4" from the stock Neon. So, you end up with a higher field of view without obliterating the view for the people behind you (as with a large SUV or van).

I've never owned a Mercedes or a Chrysler product before, so I really can't compare it to other Daimler or Chrysler touches. I will say that as far as a luxury feel, my 10 year old Nissan Altima feels more luxurious. But then again, the Caliber is designed to be a more practical vehicle (except for the R/T models), which is what attracted me to the Caliber in the first place.
