Contrary to popular belief, not all autobahns are speed limit free. I drive two autobahns, A62 & A6, on my daily commute. A62 is speed limit free except for a 2KM stretch that has a limit of 80KM/H. A6 (for the section I drive) has a limit of 130KM/H.

Even where there is no limit, there is a "suggested" limit of 130KM/H. Basically, you are allowed to drive faster, but if you are involved in an accident while driving faster, you will be held responsible for the accident. It's a case of "you can drive as fast as you want, be be prepared to accept responsibility if something goes wrong.

Some European countries require signs to be posted prior to a speed camera. Germany, however, only requires that the location be announced publicly. The most common form of public announcement is for the Polezei to let the radio stations know where the cameras are and the radio DJs will tell people that "there is a camera on X road near X location". This is fine if you listen to the radio, but if you are listening to CDs in your car, you won't hear the announcements, however, the locations are still made public.
