Tonight is a great night for showing my kids a naturally occurring science lesson. We are having a full lunar eclipse tonight. It started about two hours ago and the moon is now about ¾ eclipsed. My youngest boy was looking forward to seeing the event all day and was disappointed when we had completely overcast skies all day with rain. About an hour before the eclipse started the rain stopped and the skies cleared up. Now we have a completely unobstructed view of the event. We set up their telescope on the balcony and go outside about every five minutes to check on the progress. My youngest boy, especially, is really enjoying this.

I've seen a few complete lunar eclipses in my time. I've only two complete solar eclipses, one in '79 in Oregon and one in '92 or '93 in Alaska. There was a solar eclipse a year or two ago that was visible in Europe, but the skies were too cloudy to see anything. Maybe, some day, I'll be able to show my boys a solar eclipse.
